Risk Lessons from an Entrepreneur - Risk Management Studio

This is a guest post written by?Lori Widmer.

Having written about risk for 12 years and having run my own business for a few decades, I've seen the same risk sins committed time and again by business owners. Some I've committed. Others I've watched play out from the sidelines.

If I've learned anything from owning my own business, it's how rampant risks are and how devastating they can be if ignored indefinitely. Many of my colleagues avoid buying even the most basic business insurance policy, but the greater risks lie well beyond what's spelled out in the coverage details.

Here are some of the more common oversights that threaten small businesses:

Lack of planning. As a freelance writer and editor, I've seen numerous hiccups in my work schedule ? unplanned work stoppages thanks to inconsistent marketing practices. I've seen also how those hiccups can cripple fellow writers. Maybe it's the perception some writers have of themselves (as creatives only), but many are surprised when I ask them if they have a business plan. They've failed to plan even the most basic business elements, including their targeted earnings goals. All businesses should have at the very least a rudimentary plan of action for gaining customers, delivering services, and paying the bills.

No business interruption plan. Entrepreneurs may be cognizant of what happens when they're unable to conduct business, but it's something that affects businesses of all sizes. Unforeseen natural events, owner illness or death, legal entanglements, even divorce can create a devastating work stoppage. Without both a backup plan and business interruption insurance, the doors could close for good after just one event.

Putting all the eggs in one basket. It's tempting when a big customer comes along to devote more than 30 percent of your time and attention to that one customer. However, today's customer is tomorrow's memory. Needs are transitory, and business owners are wise to recognize that the loss of a major player could lead to dire financial straits. I recall one rather large business that closed within days of losing its largest customer, which made up 33 percent of its customer base. Diversify.

The risk of the unhappy customer. In small business, every interaction counts. The customer you please today could be tomorrow's referral. Conversely, the customer you upset or are curt with will tell anyone who will listen why they should avoid your business. Worse, many customers are taking to the Internet and letting their complaints live on indefinitely via blogs, review sites or forums. While not every customer can be satisfied, business owners can put into place a customer interaction plan to better handle customer complaints.

Beyond solid insurance coverage to mitigate those risks that can be protected against, small businesses should be conducting a thorough review of their businesses from operations through employees. By examining each area of the business for worst-case scenarios, business owners can find ways to improve practices, reduce risk, and strengthen the business.

Bank of America to pay $2.43B in settlement

(AP) ? Bank of America says it has agreed to pay $2.43 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit related to its acquisition of Merrill Lynch at the height of the financial crisis.

In the lawsuit, shareholders alleged that Bank of America and some of its officers made false or misleading statements about both companies' financial health.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of investors who bought or held Bank of America stock when the company announced its plans to buy Merrill Lynch in a $20 billion deal as the banking industry and federal regulators struggled to contain fallout from the financial crisis in the fall of 2008.

Bank of America's deal to buy Merrill Lynch was forged on the same September 2008 weekend that Lehman Brothers collapsed. The transaction came into question later after Bank of America disclosed that Merrill would post $27.6 billion in losses that year. That added significantly to Bank of America's financial woes, and the company subsequently asked for a $20 billion bailout from the government to help offset those losses, on top of the $25 billion it had already received. It has since repaid all $45 billion.

In announcing the settlement proposal on Friday, Bank of America denied the shareholders' allegations and said that it agreed to the settlement to get rid of the uncertainties, burden and costs related to the lawsuit.

"As we work to put these long-standing issues behind us, our primary focus is on the future and serving our customers and clients," Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said in a statement.

The investors who filed the suit said the amount of the settlement is the largest ever resolving such a claim.

"We are very pleased that the settlement will recoup a substantial portion of the losses incurred by (Bank of America) shareholders," Brian Guthrie, executive director of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, said in a statement. "The magnitude of the recovery reinforces the important role that pension funds play when they serve as lead plaintiffs in securities actions."

The settlement still needs court approval and will be reviewed by Judge Kevin Castel of U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

As part of the settlement, the bank has also agreed to adopt several corporate governance policies until Jan. 1, 2015. These policies include those related to majority voting in board member elections, annual disclosure of noncompliance with stock ownership guidelines, policies for a board committee regarding future acquisitions, the independence of the board's compensation committee and its compensation consultants and conducting an annual "say-on-pay" vote by shareholders.

The bank said Friday that it will pay for the settlement with existing litigation reserves and about $1.6 billion in litigation expense that will be recorded in its third quarter. The company cautioned that this expense, coupled with some other charges, is expected to lower its third-quarter earnings by about 28 cents per share.

Bank of America will report its third-quarter financial results on Oct. 17.

Shares of Bank of America Corp., which is based in Charlotte, N.C., fell 9 cents to $8.88 in morning trading Friday. It shares peaked for the past year at $10.10 on March 19 and traded as low as $4.91 in mid-December 2011.

The nuanced relationship between language and different types of perception

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? New research published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, examines the nuanced relationship between language and different types of perception.

Bilingual Infants Can Tell Unfamiliar Languages Apart

Speaking more than one language can improve our ability to control our behavior and focus our attention, recent research has shown. But are there any advantages for bilingual children before they can speak in full sentences? We know that bilingual children can tell if a person is speaking one of their native languages or the other, even when there is no sound, by watching the speaker's mouth for visual cues. But N?ria Sebasti?n-Gall?s of Universitat Pompeu Fabra and colleagues wanted to know whether bilingual infants could also do this with two unfamiliar languages. They studied 8-month-old infants, half of whom lived in either Spanish- or Catalan-speaking households and half of whom lived in Spanish-Catalan bilingual households.

The researchers looked at whether the infants could discriminate between English and French, two unfamiliar languages, using only visual cues. They found that the bilingual infants could tell the difference between the two languages, while the infants who lived in single-language households could not. These findings suggest that infants who are immersed in bilingual environments are more sensitive to the differences in visual cues associated with the sounds of various languages.

The lead author was N?ria Sebasti?n-Gall?s. The article was published in the September 2012 issue of Psychological Science.

Skilled Deaf Readers Have an Enhanced Perceptual Span in Reading

Though people born deaf are better able to use information from peripheral vision than those who can hear, they have a harder time learning to read. Researchers have proposed that the extra information coming in could distract from, rather than enhance, the process of reading. But no research has actually compared visual attention in reading between hearing and deaf readers. In a new study, Nathalie B?langer of the University of California, San Diego and colleagues investigated this issue by measuring the perceptual span, or the number of letter spaces used when reading, of skilled deaf readers, less-skilled deaf readers, and hearing readers.

The experimenters manipulated the number of letter spaces that the participants saw while reading text on a screen. They found that, compared to the other two groups, skilled deaf readers read fastest when they were given the largest number of letter spaces, showing that they had the largest perceptual span. Regardless, they were able to read just as fast as skilled hearing readers. Contrary to previous hypotheses, these findings suggest that enhanced visual attention and perceptual span are not the cause of reading difficulties common among deaf individuals.

The lead author was Nathalie N. B?langer. The article was published in the July 2012 issue of Psychological Science.

NASA cancels debris alert for space station

Plans to move the International Space Station to a slightly different orbit were called off on Thursday after controllers determined that two pieces of orbital debris would not pose a collision risk, NASA said.

Mission controllers had been monitoring debris from an old Russian Cosmos satellite and a fragment from an Indian rocket, and said there was a chance that the debris could come close enough to require an adjustment in the station's orbit on Thursday.

But NASA said additional tracking of the debris "resulted in a high degree of confidence that neither object would pose any possibility of a conjunction" with the station. As a result, Mission Control in Houston canceled the debris avoidance maneuver. Russian flight controllers endorsed the decision, NASA said.

Space junk moves so fast that it can puncture the station, so engineers try to give debris a wide berth whenever something comes close. Three spacefliers ? NASA's Sunita Williams, Russia's Yuri Malenchenko and Japan's Akihiko Hoshide ? are currently living aboard the station.

If the maneuver had been required, the engines of a European cargo ship docked to the station, the Edoardo Amaldi Automated Transfer Vehicle, would have been fired to make the move. A communications glitch kept the unmanned ATV from leaving the station earlier this week, as scheduled.

"Russian engineers told mission managers that they fully understand the nature of the error and are prepared to proceed to a second undocking attempt," NASA said in Thursday's update. The tentative plans for the debris avoidance maneuver meant the next attempt to undock the ATV had to be delayed until Friday at the earliest.

Once the craft is undocked, a pair of engine firings will send it down through the atmosphere to burn up over the Pacific Ocean.

PARIS (AP) ? Paris fashion has no boundaries and no borders.

Thursday's cultural melting pot of spring-summer 2013 shows was proof enough.

Curious designers, thirsty for new inspiration, ventured across the globe to bring new ideas and exotic cultures back to the catwalk.

Manish Arora traveled to northwestern India's Rajasthan to bring Paris a vibrant infusion of traditional Indian dress and lavish regal jewelry.

Balmain's creative nomad Olivier Rousteing, meanwhile, replaced last season's muse ? the Russian Empire's Faberge Egg ? to travel to the artisanal wicker-weavers of Cuba to give his in-vogue summer black collection a unique panache.

Barbara Bui, who also channeled black, joined the expedition with geometric American Indian prints and tribal-looking dresses and foulards.

Taking another tack, Nina Ricci, forever a romantic Parisian gamine, traveled decades back in time to produce a nostalgic show with a modern twist.

Friday's collections include Roland Mouret and Issey Miyake, as well as the debut ready-to-wear show for new Christian Dior designer Raf Simons.

BALMAIN

To welcome in next spring, some designers in Paris have said it with flowers. Balmain said it with wicker.

Never one to travel with the crowd, 27-year-old designer Olivier Rousteing used artisanal Cuban wicker-weaving as a vehicle for his signature graphic silhouettes.

Rousteing ? who on Thursday completed a full year at the helm of the iconic French fashion house ? possesses a roving eye for cultural artifacts. Strong shouldered, highly structured looks came with cropped tops, lashings of jewel and slices of torso at his Paris Fashion Week show.

Yet the high point was the wicker-embellished cropped jackets that growled like a fierce, feminine exoskeleton.

Rousteing's 3-D woven straw evoked a baroque mood, a feeling that was echoed by lavish diamond checkerboard patterns ? a replica of the polished marble flooring of the Versailles Palace.

No doubt Rousteing will pass his annual job review.

MANISH ARORA

India ? home to over a billion people and one of the most colorful cultures in the world ? is a limitless creative touchstone for designers. So it's surprising that Mumbai-born Manish Arora ? perhaps the subcontinent's most famous designer ? has not delved into its rich fashion encyclopedia before.

That is until now.

Arora presented a spicy and bohemian homage to his homeland for spring-summer 2013 at Paris Fashion Week.

But why now?

"Luckily, this year I was very attracted toward jewelry: Is there a better place to draw inspiration?" said Arora, dressed in a flamboyant gold top.

Arora took us by the bejeweled hand down a goldmine of revamped traditional Indian dress. Angrakha dresses with orange patterns were set of boldly with a shiny chainmail pant, alongside geometric prints of tigers, panthers and antelope.

However, the show was really about the jewelry, as sublime ornamentation reigned in some of the collection's more garish looks. At one point there were gasps as the Maharaja's daughter came down the catwalk: Resplendent in a standout gold face-band that circled the bottom of the eyes.

NINA RICCI

There's been nostalgia in the air at Nina Ricci of late.

This was certainly the case in Peter Copping's deceptively complex spring-summer 2013 show at Paris Fashion Week, which floated ethereally by and matched the vintage feeling of last season's show.

Perhaps the mood was set by the millions of falling cherry blossoms ? which mark the end of spring ? that opened the presentation.

Or perhaps it was the floaty chiffon tops, the gentle pleated skirts, the halter necks, the flowing fringing or the soft silhouettes that harked to bygone days of the 20's and 30's.

Although the show opened with black designs, it melted like winter into spring, shifting into dusty colors of silver gray, blush pink, red and pale lavender.

Touches like zippers kept it modern for an accomplished, commanding show ? the most feminine display so far this season in Paris.

But Copping needn't be feeling nostalgic himself ? this collection shows he has a bright future with the fashion house.

BARBARA BUI

"Black is back for summer," declared Barbara Bui, following her saleable, and typically feminine collection for spring-summer 2013.

The French-Vietnamese designer opened the show true to her word, with a series of sexy-looking black nappa ensembles.

Bui, known to have an eye on her youthful clientele, ticked the on-trend box with her gentle masculine tailored-jackets, which led the eye down provocatively to skintight pants or inches of leg.

Singing the spirit of spring's first bloom, Bui then let float by a diaphanous series of sheer organza blouses.

Fluttering layers and contrasting pockets endowed the cornflower blue and flesh colored looks an interesting textural play.

Unfortunately, the message of harmony got lost by the end ? diluted by a confusing series of geometric American Indian patterns with conflicting silhouettes.

Why men are failing in this new economy

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

In Hanna Rosin's new book "The End of Men: And the Rise of Women" she argues that women have gained a competitive advantage over men in the workplace.

There are more female employees in 12 of the 15 fastest growing industries and more women are choosing occupations that were previously monopolized by men. Women are even better educated ? for every two men who complete their bachelor's degree, there are three female graduates.

In an interview with The Daily Ticker, Rosin says the gender ratio balance has shifted partly because of the 6 million manufacturing jobs lost during the recession ? an industry that was heavily employed by men.

"The manufacturing sector is never going to come back exactly the way it was," she notes. "We can safely assume that era is over. What the "man-cession revealed," she says, "was deeper trends in the economy. [Trends] that allow women to adapt themselves more easily to what's going on."

Related: Re-Made in America: 5M Jobs Are Coming Back, Report Says

The labor participation rate for men has fallen to the lowest level in 64 years. There were more men than women out of work in August and the unemployment rate for men will likely rise as male-dominated professions like financial services cut thousands of jobs this year and next.

The jobs trend may be discouraging for men but it does not necessarily mean their demise. As the U.S. moves toward a service and information technology economy, men will have to become more flexible and change their attitudes about gender-assigned roles, Rosin says.

Related: Jobs Data Disconnect from Consumer Spending, Markets Disconnect from Reality

"Would it be such a bad thing if more men decided to become teachers? You often see women moving into professions that have previously been male dominated," she says. "But you almost never see the opposite. There's no real reason men can't take those jobs. It's kind of a social restriction. It violates their sense of manhood."

There may be a larger percentage of females in the labor market but that does not necessarily correlate to higher salaries for women. In 2010 women earned on average 77.4 cents for every dollar men earned in the same full-time position according to Census data. Women are not only working more hours and collecting less pay, but they have also taken over a role more traditionally connected to men: the breadwinner.

Related: Female Breadwinners Are Good for Both Sexes, Author Says

Mothers made as much or more than their husbands in two-thirds of U.S. families in 2010. Rosin surveyed 8,000 couples about this topic for her book. A small number of men said they were happy that their wives earned higher salaries and therefore shared the pressure of supporting a family. But the majority still believed that men should hold the breadwinner title.

Rosin says this new economic reality has deeply affected how men and women approach marriage and has forever transformed the conventional concept of the "American family."

Kindle Ebook Cover Tips: Avoid Five Common Blunders That Turn Off Buyers

by Marcia Yudkin

In a 2010 survey of avid fiction readers by The Book Smugglers, 79 percent said that cover design plays a decisive role in whether or not they purchase a particular book. I suspect the findings would be similar for nonfiction. The cover of a book can inspire curiosity, confidence and desire - or it can spark the quiet little rejection, "No, not this one." The importance of covers applies even if the book in question is digital and the cover isn't something that can be picked up and contemplated in one's hands.

A great Kindle cover doesn't really cost more than a mediocre or lousy one. As someone who keeps a keen eye on Kindle marketing for a course I teach, I've observed several common mistakes in Kindle covers that you can avoid through the instructions and feedback you provide to your cover designer. Ensure an effective cover for your ebook by heeding the following warnings and guidelines.

1. Include a byline. Covers with no author name violate readers' expectations and create discomfort in their minds. Any book worth reading was written by an individual (or by a group of them under the leadership of an editor). Their name or names belong on the cover.

2. Avoid the simplistic use of stock photos. One cover designer I worked with looked up the main theme of my book on iStockphoto, selected a visually interesting image and combined it with the words for my title, subtitle and byline. That's it. This approach can yield a nice-looking cover, but at the risk that many, many others are using the very same image for the central theme on their web sites, brochures, magazine ads, etc. For me, it's unacceptable to be so unoriginal. Tell your designer you expect something that people interested in your topic haven't seen before.

3. For a book series, create a family of covers. Whether it's nonfiction or fiction, someone shopping for books should be able to spot the resemblance instantly when they see two covers in the same series on the same page. Establish the pattern through color, a distinctive font, type of image, shapes, layout or some combination of these elements.

4. Go flat, not 3-D. Amazon, Nook, the iBookstore and other ebook marketplaces do not want three-dimensional covers that show a spine for the book and the edges of the pages it contains. They want a flat image with no depth and no other parts of the book showing besides the front.

5. Match the cover with the audience. The frou-frou style used on many "chick-lit" novels would be completely wrong for a business book that needs to be taken seriously, just as a dark, menacing look that signals a thriller or science-fiction title won't work for a cookbook. Communication with the designer about the target readers, genre of the book and the desired emotional tone for the cover should avoid this pitfall.

If you ask friends and colleagues for feedback on cover designs, don't ask which ones they like. Ask, "Does this make you think of a ___ [the type of book it is]?" "Which cover makes you want to know more about the book?" Simulate a shopping situation by placing your top cover candidate alongside the covers of published books it will be competing with. If it can hold its own in that situation, you may have a winner.

Researchers determine how inflammatory cells function, setting stage for future remedies

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? A research team led by investigators at New York University and NYU School of Medicine has determined how cells that cause inflammatory ailments, such as Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, and arthritis, differentiate from stem cells and ultimately affect the clinical outcome of these diseases.

"We've found that hundreds of new genes are involved in the function and development of these cells," said co-author Richard Bonneau, an associate professor at New York University's Center for Genomics and Systems Biology and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. "This expansion in our understanding can be used as a framework for designing new therapies to combat a range of ailments where the immune system attacks self."

These cells, called T-cells by immunologists, play a role in fighting off infection, but can also induce inflammation and other processes that damage tissues and contribute to several common inflammatory diseases. T-cells are also key cell types in new immune-cell based therapies for fighting cancer. There are many types of T-cells, and how they differentiate from stem cells in the human body lies at the center of understanding several diseases.

"We have been striving for several years to understand what makes inflammatory T-lymphocytes special," said lead investigator Dan Littman, MD, PhD, the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Professor of Molecular Immunology and a professor of pathology, microbiology and molecular pathogenesis at NYU School of Medicine and a faculty member of the Skirball Institute on Biomolecular Medicine. "They can protect us from microbes, but they also have the potential to cause autoimmune disease.

"We were fortunate to be able to bring together a team of immunologists, computational biologists, and genomics experts to begin to solve this puzzle. Whereas before we only knew of a handful of genes that influence the function of these cells, we now know of hundreds of new ones that can serve as a resource for further studies by us and other laboratories. Our hope is that some of these new molecules will be the Achilles heel that we can target to treat these diseases."

The findings, which are reported in the latest issue of the journal Cell, lay the groundwork for understanding how these cells regulate their genomes through a regulatory network that connects many environmental stimuli to a large number of genes and their interactions. This large network model is essentially the brain that T-cell precursors, or stem cells, use to decide what they want to be when they grow up. Specifically, a network model can be used simulate what inhibiting a gene with a drug would do to different T-cells and, in this way, aid the development of new therapeutic measures to address these afflictions.

The study focused on T-helper 17 cells (Th17) and how they regulate the synthesis of gene products from thousands of regions of the chromosome. Th17 cells have previously been implicated in inflammatory diseases. Other studies have also identified hundreds of genes that roles in pro-inflammatory diseases. This new study places these implicated genes on a timeline of cellular development and ultimately puts them together in an integrated model of how genes interact.

To explore the inner workings of these cells, the researchers used a systems biology approach, which focuses measuring multiple biomolecules and capturing multiple interactions within an organism to understand how it functions. For example, each of the 450 data sets integrated in this study contained measurements of gene expression, chromatin structure, or gene-chromosome interaction that spanned millions of locations along the genome. This holistic method offers a broader understanding of interconnected molecular phenomena essential to running life's program -- a process similar to studying an entire automobile while it functions rather than separately studying the headlights, brakes, or steering column.

To extract meaningful results from this very large data set, the researchers employed statistical techniques to uncover the network model from the large amount of data. To verify the accuracy of the computer modeling, further laboratory experiments were conducted using mice. Although the study was carried out in mice, the researchers found that their work could offer explanations as to why a large number of genes are associated with several human inflammatory diseases. The researchers' computer models identified candidate genes that influence the expression of more than 2,000 genes and play a significant role in the regulation of Th17 cells. They found that the core of this network was significantly enriched for the genes that human geneticists have found to be associated with pro-inflammatory disease. These genes serve as cogs in the regulation of expression or suppression of genes in Th17 cells and are potential leads for developing new therapeutic approaches to modulating inflammation.

Earn More With Your Home Based Business ? Diabetic Diet ...

TIP! Prepare a written business plan if you have a home-based business. Every small business needs an outline of what its goals are.

Many people have learned that one path to financial success is a work from home business. While owning a home business can be a profitable endeavor, knowing where to start can be difficult. To be successful, you need to learn everything that you can about home business enterprise. The information presented in this article will help you in this learning process.

TIP! If you are going to be running a business from your home, it may be a useful tip for you to save all your receipts. When you own a business, everything that you use for business, including costs for vehicles, is tax deductible.

Decide on how much you will charge for your merchandise. If you will be producing your own product, find out what it will cost to make it. Standard pricing is twice the cost of materials. That is the equivalent of the wholesale price you would charge others. You should multiply your wholesale prices by three for an appropriate retail price.

TIP! Try to keep a record of all out outcome and income. You will be less likely to run into problems if you know what you are dealing with during tax season.

Designate a specific work area in your home. Make sure you have the space in your house to keep all things organized. A little organization goes a long way in most home based business environments, and this is the most effective option.

TIP! Make sure that your lunch breaks include laughter! Laughing relaxes your muscles for up to 45 minutes, relieving both physical and mental stress. When you feel yourself burning out you can watch some funny videos online.

Make yourself accessible by email, telephone or regular mail. Keep track of your contacts and find out who bought your products after asking questions. Your response might have led to their purchase decision; so find out what it was that influenced their decision, and apply that method again.

TIP! Security and safety standards are just as important for a home business as for any other business. Your family?s well being depends on it.

While it may initially seem like a luxury to make business calls and respond to customer emails in your robe and slippers, you?ll soon start to miss the camaraderie you shared with your former colleagues on a daily basis. You should try and go to other locations a few times a week in order to maintain personal relationships.

TIP! You need a rock solid business plan to succeed. Try making one regardless of whether or not you need a loan or investors.

Having a checking account designated for your business can help you keep track of your business spending. Use your business checking account for all your business purchases. Once you are organized, you have a convenient way to review your business finances at any time. It is also a good idea to open a specific credit card for your business.

TIP! Look online for the supplies that you can use for your home-based business at wholesale costs. Luckily for you, the Internet is perfect for finding all the prices and requirements that you?ll need when starting up your first home business.

Before you try selling, you need to understand the price range in the market for the items you want to sell. When you research the competition?s price for your product or service, consider whether you can offer more reasonable rates. The most effective way to generate more income for your business is to focus on your good qualities, rather than focusing on the bad qualities of other businesses.

TIP! Starting a home business takes a considerable amount of time and work. If you believe that the business will have a negative impact on family life, it may be wise to reconsider.

In work from home business, your website needs to maintain a professional appearance. A website that looks unkempt and unprofessional may drive customers away. Look around at other websites of the same nature to gain ideas on how to make a professional looking website.

TIP! Be sure to know your competitor?s prices. That will help you stay on top in the market.

When you are starting your online business, try to keep your costs down. Working from home has the benefit of not costing you money for office rental. Keep the savings from this choice by monitoring your other expenditures and making sure you don?t buy things you don?t need. With proper budgeting, you can keep your charges low.

TIP! There are lots of home business owners congregating online. Join a forum discussion relative to your niche or just about business and trends in general.

Now that you have a greater idea of what you need to do to create and manage a work from home business, you should start feeling like you can accomplish your home business enterprise goals. Remember that the information you learned is only going to work if you apply it. If you follow the tips in this article, then your home business should succeed

Skydiver aims for supersonic plunge on Oct. 8

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The countdown is on for skydiver Felix Baumgartner.

In just two weeks, Baumgartner will attempt to go supersonic when he jumps from a record altitude of 23 miles over New Mexico. Project managers announced Tuesday the feat will take place Oct. 8.

The Austrian parachutist jumped from 13 miles in March and 18 miles in July. This time, he hopes to break the all-time record of 19.5 miles set in 1960.

Baumgartner's capsule was damaged in the latest practice jump and had to be repaired and retested. A giant helium balloon will hoist the pressurized capsule with Baumgartner inside, dressed in a pressure suit. Takeoff will be from Roswell.m

Baumgartner expects to reach a top speed of 690 mph and break the sound barrier with only his body.

Business Leaders Want Wind Power Tax Credit Extended

wind power South Australia Siemens production tax credit Donald Trump Ceres Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy AWEA Last week, diverse a group of 19 companies sent a letter to Congress asking them to extend the production tax credit (PTC)? for wind power. Among the companies were a combination of green and traditional businesses including: Yahoo, Ben & Jerry?s, Johnson & Johnson, Seventh Generation, Sprint and Starbucks. The 19 companies are part of the Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy (BICEP), a project undertaken by Ceres.

These businesses are concerned that allowing the PTC to expire would raise the price of wind power. Support for the credit comes from both Republicans and Democrats, who stress the need for a level playing field for renewables to compete effectively against oil and gas which enjoy billions of dollars in subsidies every year. Only those anti-tax politicians on the far right oppose the extension, which is more than ironic considering that allowing the credit to expire would be equivalent to raising taxes on these companies. According to the letter,

?In the past decade American businesses have significantly ramped up their purchase of American wind energy. For consumers of wind electricity, the economic benefits of the PTC are tremendous. Electricity rates, which reflect marginal costs for power plant operations and fuel prices, consistently decrease when wind enters the market. Because wind prices can be locked in up front, businesses incorporating wind into their energy portfolios are better equipped to hedge market volatility in traditional fuels markets caused by supply shocks. We are concerned that allowing the PTC to expire will immediately raise prices for the renewable electricity we buy today.?

The cost of wind power has dropped 90 percent since 1980, largely due to the production tax credit which has spurred investment and brought economies of scale into the industry. It is one of the fastest growing energy sources (second only to solar, which is still far behind in total power provided) and accounted for 35 percent of all new capacity installed in the past four years. We now have 47 GW of wind power installed which represents a little more than 3 percent of our national demand.

The letter goes on to point out that wind power can help to spur business growth. According to American Wind Energy Association estimates, failure to extend the credit could contribute to a net loss of 91,000 jobs. Of the $79 billion of private investment that has gone into wind power, $20 billion occurred in the past five years.

In short, wind power is not only good for the environment; it is good for the economy, too.

Of course, not all business leaders are in favor of wind power. Donald Trump is vehemently opposed to it. He took out an ad in Scotland opposing wind development, though the ad was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.

His problem? He claims it will spoil the view at his $1.2 billion golf resort, why else?

Meanwhile, Siemens, in anticipation of the tax credit expiration, is already preparing to lay off over 600 workers, about a third of its U.S. wind power workforce. The company has invested over $100 million in the industry here.

At the same time, the state of South Australia announced that that they produced over 50 percent of their power from wind earlier this month. Their power sector has reduced its emissions by 27 percent over the past five years.

The U.S. wind production tax credit which provide 2.2 cents per kWh, was originally signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. It is set to expire at the end of this year if not renewed by Congress.

When in Helsinki, or rather Espoo, there's only thing left to do after stopping by Nokia's glass House -- visit Rovio's HQ. That's right, the company made famous (and filthy rich) by flinging fowl is just a short walk away from Elop and co.'s waterside domain. And, in a bit of perfect timing, we were graciously welcomed into the gaming outfit's office on the eve of its Bad Piggies launch. As you might expect and hope, the walls, doors, floors, couches, desks, soft drinks and even bottles of hand lotion are adorned in all things Angry Birds. There's even a mock-up experience store -- populated with a variety of branded paraphernalia -- sitting pretty in pale green just outside a bank of cubicles. It's everything we ever imagined it to be. But don't just take our words for it. You can check it out for yourself in a video after the break. And now, we're really Finnish(ed).

Day 25. Gathering. Bush's Beans Chuck Roast Chili with Savory ...

Gathering.

Coming together.

To me Autumn says ?gather.?

Whether it be your immediate family, or extended, or neighbors and friends. Or strangers.

Autumn?s a different season for those who have college kids, so gathering during this time may vary from home to home.

It may be a Sunday, a week day, whatever you choose, but make this one day a week a special day for your family to come together to enjoy a hearty meal.

Start simple, creating one main dish that?s liked by everyone.

Use your slow cooker if it makes ?the day? more slower paced and easy.

With the recipe I?m sharing today, I?ve prepared the meat the day before in the slow cooker, and then the day of ?gathering,? I reached into my pantry to pair Bush?s Black Beans and Bush?s Cannellini Beans (or Bush?s Great Northern Beans work very well, too) together in to a chili.

A simple gathering of pantry items.

For a simple, robust, hearty Autumn meal.

Easy dinners.

Bringing people together.

Gathering.

Do you have one day a week where you prepare supper for everyone?

Asian stocks sink as global economy fears rise

HONG KONG (AP) ? Asian stocks mostly drifted lower Monday as investors' growing concerns about the shaky global economy overpowered any remaining optimism over central bank stimulus efforts.

Crude oil tumbled while the dollar rose against the euro but fell against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.4 percent to 9,070.78 and Seoul's Kospi index shed 0.2 percent to 1,999.18. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down less than 0.1 percent to 20,724.17 while Sydney's ASX S&P 200 fell 0.4 percent to 4,388.60. Benchmarks in Singapore and Indonesia also fell.

Strategists at Credit Agricole CIB wrote in a research note that the "euphoria emanating" from recent moves by the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan to stimulate growth is "fading quickly."

"The reality of weak growth and underlying structural tensions is coming back to haunt markets."

The Fed vowed in mid-September to buy billions in mortgage securities each month until the economy improves in a third round of what is known as quantitative easing, or QE3. The ECB and Bank of Japan followed with their own renewed bond-buying plans.

"There is this struggle between optimism towards QE3 and the concern about the global economic slowdown," said Louis Wong, a director at Phillip Securities in Hong Kong. "So investors are weighing the easing measures of central banks and the health of the global economy."

China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.3 percent to 2,032.44, reversing losses earlier in the day. However, the benchmark is still at its lowest point since January 2009.

Chinese stocks are being hurt by a dispute between China and Japan over disputed islands that has heightened tensions between Asia's two biggest economies.

They're also under pressure as investors worry about what Chinese authorities will do to restart growth amid the country's economic slowdown. Wong said it's unlikely that Chinese authorities will unveil any major stimulus measures ahead of the National Day holiday next week or an expected but still unscheduled Communist Party meeting to hand over power to a next generation of leaders.

"This inaction by the Chinese government also weighs," Wong said.

Asian markets were also reacting to some downbeat economic reports released over the weekend. The U.S. Labor Department said that the unemployment rate rose in more than half of states last month, the latest evidence that hiring remains tepid across the world's biggest economy. The World Trade Organization, meanwhile, cut estimates for global trade growth for this year and next. Both reports came out on Friday after Asian markets closed.

In Tokyo, camera maker Canon Inc. slid 3.5 percent and global automaker Honda Motor Co. dropped 2 percent. Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. lost 2 percent. Petrochina, China's biggest oil and gas company, fell 1.6 percent.

On Wall Street Friday, markets were little changed. The Dow lost 0.1 percent to close at 13,579.47 while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 fell a minuscule 0.01 percent to 1,460.15. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 percent, to 3,179.96.

In currencies, the euro weakened to $1.2947 from $1.2989 in late trading Friday while the dollar fell to 78.07 Japanese yen from 78.15 yen.

U.S. benchmark crude for October delivery was down 82 cents to $92.08 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 47 cents to settle at $92.89 on Friday.
