Final Thoughts - Single Guy Money - Personal Finance, Debt ...

painting homeSome people enjoy painting, while other people despise this task. My thoughts exist somewhere in between. For simple projects - such as painting a single room - I actually enjoy getting down to business. However, if the job is labor- and time-intensive, I often call in a professional.

Over the past few years, I have learned quite a bit about the "professional painting industry." One thing is certain: most painters or painting companies are either a pleasure to work with, or a complete disaster. For the money you pay, you should expect the job to be done right. But before your crew ever gets their brushes wet, you need to be aware of common scams and problems you can encounter to ensure that you avoid troubles and hire a crew that will be easy to work with and provide a quality job.

Common Scams to Be Aware Of

Just as with all industries, there are people who are out to scam you. There are many painters who can do the job right - but some of them will want to do a good job while taking as much money as possible. Furthermore, there are painters who may take advantage of naive customers and perform a sub-par job.

1. Prep Work Fees
As I received quotes for an exterior paint job last summer, I quickly found that there was a lot of prep work involved. For example, there were holes that needed patching and some bad wood that needed to be replaced.

After talking to four companies, only one charged for prep work. And not only did he want to charge for prep, the cost was outrageous. While this may not have technically been a scam, it is safe to say that he was charging for something that others were doing for free.

2. Not Applying Two Coats
If you don't know anything about painting, this may be one area in which you get scammed. There are times when a wall or other type surface needs two coats. If you feel this is necessary, there is nothing wrong with requesting or agreeing to two coats of paint.

Of course, there are situations in which applying two coats is overkill. For example, if you are having your walls painted the same color (or a similar, darker shade) as the existing paint, you probably don't need two coats.

In some cases, painters will charge you for two coats so that they can double the cost of labor. To make things even worse, you could be charged for two coats and only have one applied. If your job doesn't need the additional coat, you may never know that you've been scammed.

3. Refusing to Sign a Contract
When you hire somebody to do work on your house or property, you need a contract, no questions asked. For whatever reason, some people just don't believe this. Instead, they think that a handshake is good enough.

Fortunately, for me, the last time I hired a painter, the contract came in handy. In the contract were explicit details on what was and was not to be painted. However, one of the workers neglected to heed the contract and painted an area (the backdoor) that was not to be touched. Soon enough, I realized that this had been done and questioned the crew. The response was not what I wanted to hear: "Sorry, we made a mistake. It will only cost you about $30 for us to fix it."

Despite knowing it was their mistake, they didn't want to pay to fix it. Fortunately, the contract settled the dispute easily enough.

Final Thoughts

If you don't like painting, you may have to hire a professional at some point. This can be an positive experience if you get the right person on the job. However, hastily hiring the wrong person for the job may cause you a major headache. Be sure to stipulate your needs in the contract, and be sure you are not over-paying, nor paying for services you do not need.

What additional scams do you suggest to look out for? Have you ever had a negative experience hiring a painter?

Ten Yemen chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) were recently born at the Zoological Society of London's (ZSL) Whipsnade Zoo. A popular pet species, the chameleons, also known as veiled chameleons, still thrive in the mountainous wilds of Yemen and Saudi Arabia. It is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

Babies are born measuring only half-an-inch long. Their skin color changes to reflect their mood or to blend with their surroundings.

Mandatory reverse boot camp will prepare troops to leave military

WASHINGTON -- Troops leaving the military will go through a five- to seven-day reverse boot camp covering job skills, personal finances and veterans benefits under a new initiative to be announced by President Barack Obama on Monday.

At a speech before the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in Nevada, Obama will outline the program -- dubbed Transition Goals Planning Success, or Transition GPS -- as part of a wider effort to help curb veterans unemployment and the difficult integration into civilian life for many troops.

The overhaul is the first significant change in the military's Transition Assistance Program in more than 20 years. It comes in response to criticism that the current three-day voluntary program is outdated and too superficial.

According to senior administration officials, the new Transition GPS will include a pre-separation assessment and individual counseling for all troops, development of an personal transition plan, and certification that the servicemember has met "career readiness" standards before leaving the military. The program also includes efforts to provide career counseling and credentialing opportunity throughout a servicemember's military career, officials said.

The new five-day transition curriculum, created by an interagency task force, will cover lessons in basic budgeting tips, resume preparation, dealing with family adjustment issues, and translating military skills into a civilian environment. Representatives from the Departments of Labor and Veterans Affairs will brief outgoing troops on post-service benefits.

Officials said troops will also be offered another two-day course in one of three categories: attending college, getting a technical or civilian-credentialed job, or starting a business from scratch.

The new program won't be fully implemented throughout the military until late 2013, but officials said seven military installations have already begun pilot programs testing the new approach. About 140,000 troops are expected to go through Transition GPS annually once it is fully implemented.

In the past, such transition programs have been optional. But legislation passed by Congress late last year called for improvements to the program and making the efforts mandatory for all but a few senior servicemembers and some troops with immediate work opportunities.

Obama announced plans to develop a reverse boot camp last August, along with tax credits for companies that hire veterans, initiatives to help servicemembers obtain work credentials, and online tools to help more easily search for available jobs matching military skills.

Congress also passed new education benefits for older unemployed veterans, but so far has refused to back a White House plan creating a "veteran job corps" focusing on police, emergency services and park ranger jobs for former military.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is scheduled to address the VFW conference on Tuesday.

Wigg Mission: Indian Adventure: 10 for YSA Family Home Evening!

Saturday evening we had 10 Young Single Adults at our place for Family Home Evening.

?Kannagi, my cleaning lady, made dahl, in the far bowl, and rotis, the flat bread in the near bowl. ?I made the Chicken Biryani in the big pot. ?It was my first attempt and it was good. ?I used too much rice, I think, which I will change next time I make it. ?

?The meal was a success. ?Everyone ate and talked and enjoyed themselves.

?Mike, Terence, Ashish and Serah

?Elder Wigg taught the lesson on stories from the Book of Mormon.?

Right now he's on his 'Rameumptom'.

?He is a good teacher.

?He can be serious when needed...

?...funny at times...(I don't know how he can still wear those sheepskin slippers in India? It's way too hot, in my opinion.)

?...quite entertaining and animated at times. (Now I'm up on the Rameumptom!)

?This is Jasmin and Camy.

We had white chocolate cheesecake for dessert as well as the standard banana bread and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. ?I think everyone got their tummies full.

?Rani, Mike, Terence

?Ashish and Serah. ?

Serah will be going on her mission to Salt Lake, Temple Square the middle of September. ?She is all ready with her US Visa and even her flight has been booked. ?Good for you, Serah!

?Ashish served his mission here in the India Bangalore Mission. ?

He even served as an Assistant in the office with Elder Pimsakul just before we came on our mission. ?He left to go home to Delhi about 2 weeks before we arrived.

?back row: Sister Wigg, Elder Wigg, Mike, Terence

middle row: Jennifer, Jasmin, Serah, Ashish

front row: Camy, George, Gracy, Rani

?This is a great bunch of young adults, and almost young adults (some of the girls are still in Young Womens).

?funny face photo?

(ok, so some of us don't have to make a funny face, we already have a funny face!)

We had a fun family night!?

Next time bring more friends as we had too much Biryani left over.
