Apple launches new attack on Samsung phones

Apple has asked a federal court in California to block Samsung Electronics from selling its new Galaxy Nexus smartphones, alleging patent violations.

In a suit filed last week in San Jose, Apple said the Galaxy Nexus infringes on patents underlying features that customers expect from its products. Those include the ability to unlock phones by sliding an image and to search for information by voice.

Samsung representatives did not immediately return requests for comment.

With the new suit, Apple is opening up another legal assault on the Korea-based company after taking Samsung to the same court in April of last year. In the earlier case, Apple alleges that Samsung illegally copied iPhone and iPad design features and the look of its screen icons. That case is still going on, though in December Apple lost a bid for a preliminary bar that would have kept Samsung from selling Galaxy phones and tablets.

Apple acknowledged the setback in the new action and said it is now suing over new products and different patents.

In addition to the California cases, Apple and Samsung are waging more than 20 legal fights in at least 10 countries in their war for global leadership of smartphone and tablet markets.

The new case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, et a 12-00630.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? It was a surreal scene: Whitney Houston had died at the Beverly Hilton, and hours later and a few floors below, her life was being celebrated at the event where her career was launched.

On Saturday night, Clive Davis ? Houston?s mentor, producer, champion and longtime friend ? memorialized her at his pre-Grammy gala, held downstairs in the same hotel where her body was being examined by coroner?s officials.

Ray Davies and Elvis Costello took to the stage to perform as Los Angeles county coroner?s Capt. John Kades arrived at the hotel. Alicia Keys arrived earlier and embraced Davis as he prepared for the show under extreme duress.

With celebrities including Quincy Jones, Tony Bennett, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Hudson in attendance, a somber Davis, reading from a sheet of paper, said: ?I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me. She was full of life, looking forward for tonight. She loved music and she loved this night that celebrated music.?

He added: ?Whitney was a beautiful person and she had a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage ? so many times. So simply put: Whitney would have wanted the music to go on.?

He dedicated the evening to her and asked for a moment of silence as a photo of the 48-year-old, hands wide open, looking to the sky, appeared on the screen.

Then, he said with excitement: ?Now ladies and gentlemen, let the music begin.?

Davis introduced Houston, a young woman with a scintillating voice, more than two decades ago at his annual pre-Grammy soiree.

Bennett, the evening?s first performer, recounted other recent big-name deaths in the music industry.

?First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now the magnificent Whitney Houston,? he said. ?Let?s legalize drugs, like Amsterdam. It?s a very sane city now.?

He added that Houston was ?the greatest singer I?ve ever heard in my life.?

The scene was somewhat surreal given Houston?s shocking death only earlier in the day. But Grammy president and CEO Neil Portnow, who called Houston a friend, said ?canceling the party was never an option.?

?A lot of us holding hands tonight, on each other?s shoulders ? We?ll be celebrating,? he said. ?The legacy she left will be here forever.?

He announced that Jennifer Hudson would perform a tribute to Houston at Sunday?s Grammys.

Diddy gave his own memories of Houston, recalling her incredible smile and positive spirit. He said when he heard she died, ?I was in a state of shock.?

?Whitney Houston, simply put, had the greatest voice of the world,? he told the crowd. ?Hearing her sing was like listening to magic. ? We lost an angel, and anytime we think of Whitney, we have to remember the positivity she gave us, when she performed, she performed 5,000 percent. She wasn?t a hater, she was a congratulator.?

R&B singers Monica and Brandy, heavily influenced by Houston, were supposed to perform together at the event, but Davis said the singers were ?too heart-stricken.?

?I know the role Whitney played in their lives. Thank you for staying,? he said.

Earlier in the evening, India.Arie said Houston ?set the standard for what it is to be a great female artist.?

Producer Jimmy Jam said her death was a ?bittersweet irony? given that Davis heralded Houston as a great talent to watch when he had her perform at his party in her youth.

?The fact that it happened on this day, this event is where Clive Davis introduced Whitney to the world. We said hello to Whitney at the Clive Davis (gala), it may be appropriate we?re saying our first goodbyes to Whitney at a Clive Davis event,? Jam said. ?In a weird way it?s appropriate, the show must go on. I think Whitney would have wanted that to happen. ? Tonight I think we begin to celebrate and remember.?

Keys called the evening a ?very special night? and, after singing a line from Houston?s ?I Wanna Dance With Somebody,? noted how the late diva had inspired her.

?You think about how this person touched you,? she said. ?(Then) you form a friendship, a sisterhood, a bond. You see how incredible they really are. ? She was a sister to me.?

Moments later, she launched into her hit ?No One,? saying: ?This one?s for her. Let?s sing her into heaven.?

Turkmen leader set for easy victory in election (Reuters)

ASHGABAT (Reuters) ? Turkmenistan votes on Sunday in a one-sided election certain to extend the rule of President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov over a Central Asian country holding 4 percent of global gas reserves, which rights groups rank among the world's most repressive.

Berdymukhamedov's seven token challengers, including government ministers and the director of a state-run textile factory, have lauded the president in the run-up to the vote.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe has not sent observers, after deciding during a pre-vote mission to the country in December that its presence would not "add value" given limited freedoms and lack of political competition.

Shary, a 20-year-old taxi driver who gave only his first name, said he did not need to visit a polling station because election officials would bring a ballot box to his home.

"They will come with a ballot box and I will vote, although nothing depends on me," he said.

Russian television channels, picked up by satellite dishes that crowd the roofs of Soviet-era apartment blocks in Ashgabat and other cities, are a rare connection with the outside world in a country where Facebook and YouTube are blocked.

After winning the last presidential election in February 2007, with 89 percent of the vote, Berdymukhamedov began gradually to dismantle the often bizarre cult of personality around Saparmurat Niyazov, the country's first post-Soviet leader, who died of a heart attack.

He has restored the traditional names of the months, which had been altered by Niyazov to honor national symbols. For several years, January had shared Niyazov's adopted name of Turkmenbashi - Head of All Turkmen.

Keen to diversify gas sales and attract investment, Berdymukhamedov has engaged foreign governments and promised economic reforms while avoiding the more eccentric traits of his predecessor, who banned opera, circus and gold teeth.

Some analysts say the elections are being choreographed to present an image of democracy to the West, where energy companies are vying for a share of the world's fourth-largest natural gas reserves, along with oilfields in the Caspian Sea.

China is in pole position to snap up these resources, having lent more than $8 billion to help Turkmenistan develop its energy sector and built a 2,000-km (1,250-mile) pipeline to its border, while talks on a trans-Caspian route to Europe drag on.

Though his absolutist tendencies pale next to those of his predecessor, Berdymukhamedov is becoming more ubiquitous. His subjects call him Arkadag: The Patron. Lawmakers have bestowed upon him the title "Hero of Turkmenistan."

International rights groups also say there is little evidence that Turkmenistan is improving its human rights record.

Amnesty International, in a statement two days before the election, said it was concerned about torture and ill-treatment in Turkmen prisons, as well as "severe restrictions" on freedom of movement and expression, political activism and faith.

"Turkmenistan remains closed to international scrutiny by choice," said John Dalhuisen, Amnesty International's Europe and Central Asia deputy program director. The organization said its repeated requests to visit the country had gone unanswered.

Only North Korea and Eritrea ranked lower in the 179-country press freedom index compiled by Reporters Without Borders. Human Rights Watch said in its latest annual report that media and religious freedoms were subject to "draconian restrictions."

Turkmenistan has 2.9 million registered voters, slightly more than half of the total population. Berdymukhamedov won 89 percent of the vote in the last presidential election.

Clarksville, TN ? Junior Chantelle Grey, of the Austin Peay State University women?s track and field team will have a chance to challenge some of the NCAA?s top runners at Saturday?s SPIRE Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

Grey ? who is slated to run the 800-meters ? will be one of a handful of individuals to compete at the prestigious invitation-only event held at the Olympic-grade SPIRE Institute. The magnificent indoor track facility seats more than 5,000 spectators and features a 300-meter, eight-lane track.

?We?re excited about this meet,? head coach Doug Molnar said. ?This will give her the chance to run against some quality opponents and see what she can really do. She?s more than ready to run under 2:10, but it?s a question of how far under. Her workouts indicate she?s ready to run fast.?

The Montana transfer already has two wins under her belt ? opening the season with a win at the Niswonger Invitational and later winning at the UAB Blazer Invitational. She set her season-best time at the Indiana?s Gladstein Invitational when she finished second at 2:11.09.

The women?s 800-meter race will have an NCAA championship feel with seeding starting with Michigan?s Rebecca Addison at 2:03.79. Addison was an NCAA All-American after finishing eighth in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Of course, Grey?s ultimate goal is a 2:04.50 time that would automatically qualify her for the NCAA Indoor Championship. The APSU school record mark is 2:06.17 held by Austin Peay Hall of Famer Sheena Gooding, who also was an NCAA Indoor All-American.

?This is a great opportunity for Chantelle to set herself up for the OVC Championships and then Last Chance meet to get the 2:05 range,? Molnar said. ?That would be quite an effort in chasing the school record.?

Cold weather returns to the South; snow possible (AP)

ATLANTA ? Cold weather has been making a comeback in the South this weekend, after what's been a very mild winter so far.

The National Weather Service said north Georgia was in for windy and cold conditions Saturday with temperatures in the 20s. Snow showers were possible in the mountains. And a freeze warning was issued for south Georgia overnight.

The state Department of Transportation sent crews to far-northeast Georgia to clear snow from some state routes, where less than half an inch had accumulated.

Flurries were reported as far south as the northern areas of metro Atlanta as a cold front crossed the Southeast. Wind chills were forecast in single-digits for northern parts of the state Sunday morning.

In Florida, churches and shelters were offering people a warm place to stay as temperatures took a dive Saturday. A freeze warning is in effect for much of the Tampa Bay area, Orlando and Tallahassee, among other cities.

The cold snap brought freezing temperatures to much of Tennessee on Saturday, with snow flurries in Nashville and some accumulation expected in the tri-cities area. The weather service was predicting one to three inches of snow on the northern Cumberland Plateau with two to six inches in the higher elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains.

In eastern Kentucky on Saturday night, forecasters were predicting wind chills in the single digits, falling to near zero by dawn. Snow showers were expected to continue throughout the day with two to three inches of accumulation possible.

Farther north, in places more accustomed to wintry weather, snowstorms in Ohio on Saturday prompted multiple highway closures and driving advisories and led to dozens of crashes.

Westbound lanes of Interstate 76 in northeast Ohio were closed for hours after a series of crashes involving more than two dozen vehicles, but local police said there were no serious injuries, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported.

The State Highway Patrol said whiteout conditions in parts of northern Ohio prompted officials to close part of the Ohio Turnpike in the Akron area, near its intersection with Interstate 77. Staff Lt. Shawn Lee said about 30 crashes were reported along the toll road by midafternoon.

Winds nearing 40 mph had blown water from Lake Erie onto Interstate 90, icing the road and causing at least one accident, according to The Plain Dealer newspaper.

The winter blast through the South could be brief. The Weather Service says northern Georgia should warm into the 40s on Sunday and temperatures in south Georgia could rise into the mid-50s.

ROCHESTER, New York (AP) ? Picture it: Except for a few disposable point-and-shoots, Kodak is exiting the camera business.

Eastman Kodak Co. said Thursday that it will stop making digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames in a move that marks the end of an era for the beleaguered 132-year-old company.

Founded by George Eastman in 1880, Kodak was known all over the world for iconic cameras such as the Brownie and the Instamatic. For the last few decades, however, the Rochester, New York-based company has struggled. It was battered by Japanese competition in the 1980s, and failed to keep pace with the shift from film to digital technology.

The company sought bankruptcy protection from creditors last month in a case that covers $6.7 billion in debt. It has a year to devise a restructuring plan. Citigroup Inc. was approved to lend the company $650 million to continue operating.

Exiting the digital camera business is especially poignant for Kodak. In 1975, using an electronic sensor invented six years earlier at Bell Labs, a Kodak engineer named Steven Sasson created the world's first digital camera. It was an eight-pound (3.6 kilogram), toaster-size device that captured low-resolution black-and-white images.

Reached at home Thursday, Sasson told The Associated Press that seeing Kodak exit the business is "a bit sad" but part of a transition facing all companies that use evolving technology.

"The average person probably owns more digital cameras than they realize," he said. "It's just the reality that digital imaging is a part of our lives and you can capture images in a lot of different ways. There's a lot of choices people have, cellphones being one of them."

Through the 1990s, Kodak spent some $4 billion developing the photo technology inside most of today's cellphones and digital devices. But fearing that it might cannibalize its celluloid film business, Kodak waited until 2001 to bring its own digital cameras to the consumer market. By then, it faced strong competitors like Sony Corp. and Canon.

These days, digital camera sales are suffering as consumers increasingly take photos on smartphones such as the iPhone. Certain smartphone makers such as LG, Nokia, Motorola and Samsung have agreed to pay Kodak to license its digital camera technology, while companies like Apple are fighting its patent claims.

Before Thursday's announcement, Kodak had already been trying to shrink its product line and sell in fewer retail venues, but as sales declines worsened, the company saw no way to make the business profitable.

"We made the logical conclusion that there was no clear path to profitability and we have to focus on generating profits at this point," said Kodak spokesman Chris Veronda.

Kodak said getting out the digital camera business by June should help cut losses by about $100 million a year as it struggles to emerge from bankruptcy.

The company's digital camera line was part of a rapidly shrinking division that accounted for about a quarter of Kodak's revenue in the three-month period through September.

For the nine months through September, total company sales plunged 18 percent to $4.3 billion and it lost $647 million.

Kodak sees home photo printers, high-speed commercial inkjet presses, workflow software and packaging as the core of its future business. Since 2005, the company has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into new lines of inkjet printers. Kodak said it's working with retailers to ensure an orderly transition. The company will continue to honor product warranties and provide technical support for the discontinued products.

The company didn't say how many jobs would be eliminated as a result of the decision, but did say that it expects to take a charge of $30 million related to separation costs.

Kodak owns patents that cover a number of basic functions in many smartphone cameras, and the bankruptcy judge has given the company until June 30 to come up with a procedure to sell them.

The company picked up $27 million in patent-licensing fees in the first half of 2011. It made about $1.9 billion from those fees in the previous three years combined. But no buyers have emerged since Kodak started shopping them around in July.

Online dating has not only shed its stigma, it has surpassed all forms of matchmaking in the United States other than meeting through friends, according to a new analysis of research on the burgeoning relationship industry.

The digital revolution in romance is a boon to lonely-hearters, providing greater and more convenient access to potential partners, reports the team of psychological scientists who prepared the review. But the industry?s claims to offering a ?science-based? approach with sophisticated algorithm-based matching have not been substantiated by independent researchers and, therefore, ?should be given little credence,? they conclude.

?Online dating is definitely a new and much needed twist on relationships,? says Harry Reis, one of the five co-authors of the study and professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. Behavioral economics has shown that the dating market for singles in Western society is grossly inefficient, especially once individuals exit high school or college, he explains. ?The Internet holds great promise for helping adults form healthy and supportive romantic partnerships, and those relationships are one of the best predictors of emotional and physical health,? says Reis.

But online love has its pitfalls, Reis cautions. Comparing dozens and sometimes hundreds of possible dates may encourage a ?shopping? mentality in which people become judgmental and picky, focusing exclusively on a narrow set of criteria like attractiveness or interests. The 64-page analysis reviews more than 400 psychology studies and public interest surveys, painting a full and fascinating picture of an industry that, according to one industry estimate, attracted 25 million unique users around the world in April 2011 alone. The report was commissioned by the Association for Psychological Science and will be published in the February edition of its journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest.

Other highlights from the analysis include:

Online dating has become the second-most-common way for couples to meet, behind only meeting through friends. According to research by Michael Rosenfeld from Stanford University and Reuben Thomas from City College of New York, in the early 1990s, less than 1 percent of the population met partners through printed personal advertisements or other commercial intermediaries. By 2005, among single adults Americans who were Internet users and currently seeking a romantic partner, 37 percent had dated online. According to research by Michael Rosenfeld, a professor of sociology at Stanford University, in 2007-2009, 22 percent of heterosexual couples and 61 percent of same-sex couples had found their partners through the Web. Those percentages are likely even larger today, the authors write.

Attitudes have changed radically. Through the 1980s and into the 1990s, a stigma was associated with personal advertisements that initially extended to online dating. But today, ?online dating has entered the mainstream, and it is fast shedding any lingering social stigma,? the authors write.

Men and women behave differently online.

• A 2010 study of 6,485 users of a major online dating site found that men viewed three times more profiles than women did (597,169 to 196,363).
• Men were approximately 40 percent more likely to initiate contact with a woman after viewing her profile than women were after viewing a man?s profile (12.5 to 9 percent).

Online sites may encourage ?soulmate? search. The authors caution that matching sites? emphasis on finding a perfect match, or soulmate, may encourage an unrealistic and destructive approach to relationships. ?People with strong beliefs in romantic destiny (sometimes called soulmate beliefs) ? that a relationship between two people either is or is not ?meant to be? ? are especially likely to exit a romantic relationship when problems arise ? and to become vengeful in response to partner aggression when they feel insecure in the relationship,? the authors write.

Online dating sites are not ?scientific?. Despite claims of using a ?science-based? approach with sophisticated algorithm-based matching, the authors found ?no published, peer-reviewed papers ? or Internet postings, for that matter ? that explained in sufficient detail ? the criteria used by dating sites for matching or for selecting which profiles a user gets to peruse.? Instead, research touted by online sites is conducted in-house with study methods and data collection treated as proprietary secrets, and, therefore, not verifiable by outside parties.

Online dating fundamentally changes access to information. ?In the words of one online dater: ?Where else can you go in a matter of 20 minutes [and] look at 200 women who are single and want to go on dates?? ?

Along with Reis, other co-authors include Eli Finkel, associate professor of social psychology at Northwestern University and lead author on the paper; Paul Eastwick, assistant professor of psychology at Texas A&M University; Benjamin Karney, professor of psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles; and Susan Sprecher, professor of sociology and psychology at Illinois State University.
