AP Source: Obama to meet with Mideast negotiators

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A White House official says President Barack Obama will meet Tuesday morning with Israeli and Palestinian negotiators involved in a new round of peace talks.

The meeting was to happen at the White House as a second day of talks overseen by the State Department was getting underway.

The Washington negotiations are the result of Secretary of State John Kerry's six months of furious shuttle diplomacy. A previous Obama administration effort to restart stalled talks collapsed quickly in 2010.

The official insisted on anonymity in order to confirm the meeting before it was formally announced.

Prosecutors: Woman had soda can with green paint

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A woman charged with defacing the Washington National Cathedral had a soda can of green paint with her when she was arrested, and she has been linked to at least four other incidents of vandalism, including at the Lincoln Memorial, according to prosecutors and court documents.

Jia M. Tian, 58, appeared alongside a Mandarin translator on Tuesday in D.C. Superior Court, where a judge ordered her held pending a hearing later this week. Police had previously identified her as Jiamei Tian.

Tian was arrested Monday at the cathedral, where she is accused of using green paint to deface an organ and decorative woodwork in two separate chapels. She's been charged with destroying private property, a crime that carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

The cathedral has said the damage to its chapels, including to a gilded wood altarpiece, will cost thousands of dollars to fix.

Authorities believe the green paint vandalism was part of a pattern of similar acts. Green paint was discovered splattered onto the Lincoln Memorial early Friday morning, and symbols were later found painted in green on a statue outside the Smithsonian headquarters on the National Mall.

The woman, who has a Chinese passport, arrived in Washington a few days ago and was traveling on an expired visa, prosecutors said. Police said she had no fixed address but that she told officers she lived in Los Angeles. She refused to give her phone number, email address or home address, police said, and a language barrier complicated initial efforts to interview her.

Prosecutors asked the judge to keep Tian locked up, calling her a flight risk and a danger to the community. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Chambers said there was no way to guarantee her presence at future court appearances without jailing her.

"While that danger to the community is not violent, it is nonetheless serious," he said.

Tian was arrested inside the cathedral's Children's Chapel on Monday afternoon, shortly after the still-wet green paint was discovered there. When a police officer approached her, she walked away and placed the soda can with green paint inside one of three bags that were sitting on chairs in the chapel, documents show. She also had green paint on her clothing, shoes and body, authorities say.

She was wearing a multicolored sock on her right arm, and a similar sock was found in a trash can in a bathroom at the cathedral on top of a can of green paint, according to the documents. The bags placed in the chapel also had cans of green paint in them, police said.

Tian is also suspected of vandalizing a statue of Martin Luther on Thomas Circle in downtown Washington, which was also hit with green paint, prosecutors say.

Following her arrest, a witness contacted police and reported that the woman had been seen attending a service at a church less than a block from Thomas Circle, according to court documents. The witness reported that the woman was carrying three bags with her. After she left, the witness found that a pipe organ in the church had been splattered with white paint, urine and feces, police say.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Tuesday on a news talk show on NewsChannel 8 that the incidents all appear to be connected. She said Tian has "mental health issues" and it's still not clear what inspired the vandalism.

"What the motive is for the incidents, we don't really know," she said. "I guess that will all start to unfold as we go through the courts."

A lawyer for Tian argued that her client could be appropriately dealt with by immigration authorities instead of going to jail, but Chambers disagreed.

"We have her here now," he said. "We want her to answer for these alleged offenses."

Cleanup crews have been working for the past few days to remove the paint from the Lincoln Memorial. An estimated $15,000 in repair work has already begun at the Episcopal cathedral, which serves as the nation's spiritual home and has hosted state funerals and inaugural prayer services.

Afghanistan War: Troops risking their lives for a chance of normality

Afghanistan War: Troops risking their lives for a chance of normality

Vehicles from Abingdon?s 3 Close Support Logistic Regiment in Afghanistan Vehicles from Abingdon?s 3 Close Support Logistic Regiment in Afghanistan

ONE of the most dangerous jobs in Afghanistan at the moment is carried out by men and women from Abingdon-based 3 Logistic Support Regiment.

The regiment, which is known as 3 Close Support Logistic Regiment (CSLR) in Afghanistan, transports equipment and supplies in convoys of up to 100 heavily-armoured and armed vehicles back and forth between Camp Bastion and outlying bases.

Between April 1 and July 1 this year alone, personnel from 3 CSLR have travelled 121,705 miles ? equivalent to around the world five times ? to deliver equipment including 1.8m litres of bottled water and enough fuel to travel to the moon and back six times.

The convoys are led by three Mastiffs or Ridgebacks and backed by another two. The vehicles feature distinctive bars to protect from rocket attacks, a bomb-proof undercarriage and vehicle-mounted heavy machine guns that are accurate up to two kilometres.

But the job is nonetheless one of the most exposed and dangerous at present because UK infantry have handed over to the Afghan National Army and are no longer carrying out so many patrols.

The men and women from 3 CSLR told of being attacked by small arms fire, woken by rockets and hearing threats of suicide bombers over the radio, all while working in 50C or more in vehicles for days.

Commander follows dad?s footsteps

Lieutenant Sarah Dunn, 24, was brought up in Bloxham and has followed her father into the Army. She now commands a troop and is one of the few women in 3 CSLR.
The former Bloxham School student said: ?My father was in the forces and I always thought it would be an exciting job. I get to travel and I get the responsibility.
?I have 30 people in the camp to command and 16 vehicles that I have to maintain. I don?t know many other 24-year-olds who can say that.?
Lt Dunn is in charge of where the vehicles are, where they are going and what they are carrying. She also manages the drop-off when the vehicles arrive at their destination.
She added: ?Everyone?s got this sort of romantic idea of going to war. I?m almost glad I can go home and say I have experienced it, but then the other side is that people have died and it?s very serious.?
She has witnessed a fatal attack while monitoring overhead cameras and has come under rocket and small arms fire herself, but she said one of the biggest dangers was maintaining focus while working for hours at a time.
She said: ?We have had people go to sleep and go off the road and when you?re on top cover for 15 hours in the heat and you?re tired, that?s when people stop looking. That?s the hardest, to motivate yourself when you?re in the same state, and to motivate everyone else.?
But Lt Dunn also faces the challenge of being one of the few women working in 3 CSLR.
She said: ?Sometimes when you are working with the interpreters they make comments to the other lads asking if I?ve got a boyfriend, and one of the local shopkeepers wanted to buy me because he wanted to get back to the UK.
?But I don?t see anything different.
No-one is trying to prove themselves out here, we are just out doing a job like everyone else ? you?re either good or you?re not.?

Sense of humour is key but safety is paramount

Corporal Darran Price, 32, commands the vehicle second from the front of 3 CSLR?s huge convoys, but he cannot wait to return home to his wife and four children in Abingdon.
He said: ?We have a laugh on operations. It is a lot of fun ? the squaddie sense of humour ? but we get the job done and don?t want to let each other down.
?We are the main guys on the ground now because the infantry are in Forward Operating Bases.
?That?s why there has been a lot less causalities recently ? the Taliban don?t want to mess with a Mastiff. We do get pot shots but the boys have got bigger answers on these.
?We have had a few contacts where they have fired at us, otherwise they?ve put in IEDs (improvised explosive devices) knowing we?re going back that way.
?In Nad Ali (a district in Helmand province) there is always small arms fire, and we have had threats of suicide IEDs.?
Cpl Price, who is originally from Blackwood in South Wales, has a wife, Nikki, and four children, Shauna, 13, Ellie, 10, Kayden, six, and Rose, one.
He said: ?It gets hard, to be honest with you. I miss them a lot, I really do. When you come out to places like this it makes you think what you have really got back home and what life really means. I have got R&R (rest and recuperation) in two weeks and I can?t wait.
?We have just had the garden done at home and I?m going to sit in the garden and play with the kids, and then take Rose to the beach for the first time.?
But Cpl Price said he planned to stay in the Army for another nine years and, when asked if he ever felt like leaving, said: ?This is what I know. I joined up at 16 and it?s all I have ever done.?
Private Daniel Beesley, 20, joined the Army to make his father proud and is now a driver and gunner for 3 CSLR in Mastiffs or Ridgebacks.
He said: ?It?s very difficult at times, especially when you?re driving these at night because the visibility is not very good.
?The roads in Afghanistan are not like what they are in the UK.?
He said that during his first operation his vehicle almost ended up in the river after the back wheel skidded on mud as he tried to pass over a gap.
He said: ?We were near on 45 degrees.
We were looking towards the river alongside us and thinking that was a bit sketchy.?
But Pte Beesley said he felt safe within the vehicle, adding: ?As long as you?re in the vehicle and in your kit and seatbelt, nine times out of 10 you will be okay.
?They might blow up the vehicle but everyone inside should be okay.
?We?ve been shot at before and the rounds hit the vehicle but they don?t penetrate it.?
He added: ?I appreciate if people haven?t been out here before they don?t know what it is like and don?t understand it, but it?s one of those things.
?We don?t live in fear, we just go about our daily business.?
Pte Beesley, who is originally from Yorkshire, joined the Army four years ago, aged 16.
Asked why he had signed up, he said: ?My old man. He was a police officer for about 15 years.
?My brother went into the police, one of my sisters went into the Navy, and my dad, ever since I was young, thought I would suit the Army. It was his call.?
Asked if he had joined to make his father proud, he said: ?Yes.?
Lance Corporal Ian Hughes, 31, dedicates his time in the UK to fostering children with his wife, but in Afghanistan he commands the third vehicle leading the 3 CSLR convoys.
He described the operations as ?chatting sessions? of talking, taking the mickey out of each other and pulling pranks such as gluing money to the footwells of the vehicles. But he said during an incident the mood would change, adding: ?Everyone gets serious then.
?For instance, last time when we went out we saw an IED planted. We went out and blew it up ? that?s what we?re trained to do.?
He said the convoys were most frequently attacked by groups of young children throwing stones.
He said: ?These guys are extremely accurate. The kid looks seven years old but he can chuck it right into the turret.
?I think they think it?s a game. It makes a loud noise and they think it?s funny as hell. If you?re sat in the wagon you are laughing as well, but if you?re on top cover you?re ducking and diving.
?But it?s better that than them not being there. If they disappear, you tense up.
?If there?s no-one around the village or it?s quiet, that?s when you know something is planned or going to happen.?
L Cpl Hughes, who is originally from South Africa, has been fostering children with his wife, Fleur Hughes, in Abingdon for the past two years.
He said: ?It?s my contribution to living in the UK, but it has stopped for six months because I?m out here and she?s doing a music therapy degree.
?It?s rewarding to look after them and it takes your mind away from?working. When I get back we are going for long-term placement so we can start building that relationship. If it goes well then adoption might become available as well.?

Padre swaps his home church pulpit for the God quad

Padre Giles Allen, 43, is attached to Saints Peter and Paul?s Church in Wantage in the UK, but in Afghanistan he is the chaplain for 3 CSLR.

He said: ?The most important thing a padre does is pray for the troops.
?We still have our priestly discipline, morning and evening prayers every day and duties in the chapel, but on a nice, quiet week we spend most of our time visiting troops.
?At the moment it seems to be mostly family issues ? there are a number of people whose wives are pregnant so they are coping with that ? but at the beginning of the tour it was bereavement, people whose grandparents or parents had died.?
Padre Allen, who has been in the Territorial Army (TA) for five years and became a regular in October, volunteered to join troops in Afghanistan.
He said: ?If you had seen me when I was 20 years old I wouldn?t have dreamed I would be sitting here in uniform. I thought I would be a parish priest for the rest of my life.
?But I sincerely believe it?s divine intervention and inspiration. We think we are living in our comfortable little world, doing what God wants us to do, and then something comes into your mind and won?t go away.
?I really do think God has taken me out of my comfort zone.?
He added: ?It is a great privilege to be here. When you are in the barracks you are with soldiers Monday to Friday, 8am until 5pm, but out here you are living with them, eating with them, working with them. You see them in the highs and the lows.
?I suppose I do feel a bit responsible for them ? I love them, I care for them.
?Like any person, they make
you worried and you despair sometimes, but you are always concerned and thinking of them.?
Padre Allen, like other padres in theatre, has a quad bike to get around Camp Bastion ? dubbed a God Quad ? and hands out sweets donated by the Wantage congregation to the troops.
?It is amazing how a simple
little sweet will put a smile on faces.?
Padre Allen lives in Didcot when he is in the UK with his wife, Fiona, and their two children, Joe, 13, and Martha, four.

Sony Pictures Classics Unlocks Tim's Vermeer

Source: Sony Pictures Classics
July 29, 2013

Sony Pictures Classics announced today they have acquired worldwide rights to the documentary Tim's Vermeer, directed by Teller of Penn & Teller fame. Produced by Teller's stage partner Penn Jillette and Farley Ziegler, the film follows Tim Jenison, a Texas based inventor, as he attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in all of art: How did 17th century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer ("Girl with a Pearl Earring") manage to paint so photo-realistically,150 years before the invention of photography? Jenison's epic research project ultimately succeeds as he uses 17th century technology -- lenses and mirrors -- to develop a technique that might have been used by Vermeer, supporting a theory as extraordinary as what he discovers.

Spanning a decade, Jenison's adventure takes him to Delft, Holland, where Vermeer painted his masterpieces; on a pilgrimage to the North coast of Yorkshire to meet artist David Hockney; and eventually even to Buckingham Palace, to see the Queen's Vermeer.

Teller has gathered a notable crew including composer Conrad Pope (My Week with Marilyn) and post-production sound supervisor Larry Blake ("Behind the Candelabra") as well as award-winning editor Patrick Sheffield and director of photography Shane F. Kelly (A Scanner Darkly).

Says Jillette, "My buddy, Tim Jenison, told me over supper he was going to try to paint a Vermeer. Tim is a genius, but I'm a skeptic. I wanted to see him do it. Teller has been the Penn & Teller de facto director since our beginnings so we made a movie of Tim's whole monomaniacal trip. Having Sony Pictures Classics as the first words on the screen means it's more than just a couple of Vegas magicians and an eccentric inventor in his garage -- now, it's a real film that will change the history of art."

"This is an important and brilliant film. We have been admirers of Penn and Teller for decades. We look forward to presenting 'Tim's Vermeer' to audiences around the world," states Sony Pictures Classics.

Tim's Vermeer will be released in 2014.

Kimberly Wyatt at home in London

London, July 28: The Pussycat Dolls' former member Kimberly Wyatt is so comfortable here that she doesn't think she'll ever go back to the US.

The 31-year-old has been living here for her career and now she doesn't want to leave, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"I've been here for a while now. And out of anywhere in the world, I feel the most at home when I'm here," Bang Showbiz quoted Wyatt as saying.

"I love the people, the culture, I love that you can walk to the stores. I love the little villages, the good food... and my beautiful man, of course!," she added.

The "Got To Dance" judge, who has found love in male model Max Rogers, met him while she was a special guest at the "Clothes Show Live" in 2011 and their relationship has grown stronger since then.

"We were doing Clothes Show Live together, he was the main model and I was the special guest," she said.

"Nothing really happened at that point but about a month and a half later we were at the wrap party and started having a conversation... and haven't stopped since," added Wyatt.

Weiner's campaign manager in NY mayoral race quits

NEW YORK (AP) ? Anthony Weiner vowed to stay in the race for New York City mayor Sunday despite the loss of his campaign manager and the drumbeat of critics questioning his fitness for public office.

"We have an amazing staff, but this isn't about the people working on the campaign. It's about the people we're campaigning for," Weiner said after speaking at a Brooklyn church.

Weiner confirmed that campaign manager Danny Kedem resigned Saturday after reports surfaced that Weiner continued to exchange lewd photos and messages with women despite resigning from Congress in 2011 over the same behavior.

Weiner said he would keep talking about "ideas for the middle class and people struggling to make it every single day" and added, "We knew this was going to be a tough campaign."

Kedem had managed the re-election of John DeStefano Jr. to a 10th term as mayor of New Haven in 2011 and worked on Hillary Clinton's failed 2008 presidential campaign.

The 31-year-old Kedem was credited with helping Weiner pull into the lead among the crowded field of Democratic primary candidates before the latest revelations about Weiner's raunchy online exchanges with women.

Rival mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, speaker of the New York City Council, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Weiner has shown "a pattern of reckless behavior, an inability to tell the truth and a real lack of maturity and responsibility."

Unlike other candidates who have urged Weiner to end his campaign, Quinn said opponents should not "say who should or shouldn't get in and out of races."

But she questioned whether he is the right person to lead the city.

"Has he disqualified himself? Yes, he's disqualified himself," Quinn said. "But not just because of these scandals, though that certainly has. He didn't have the qualifications when he was in Congress."

Later on the NBC program, former President Barack Obama senior adviser David Axelrod accused Weiner of "wasting time and space." Axelrod, who noted that his former firm is working for another mayoral candidate, said Americans "believe in second chances, but not third chances."

On CNN's "State of the Union," Republican U.S. Rep. Peter King, the target of a blistering 2010 attack from Weiner over a bill to provide free medical services for World Trade Center recovery workers, said Weiner is "not psychologically qualified to be mayor of the city of New York."

Weiner was forced to discuss his online behavior this past week after a gossip website printed excerpts of conversations Weiner had with Indiana college student Sydney Leathers last summer.

With his wife, Huma Abedin, alongside, Weiner apologized and promised that the "behavior is behind me." He later admitted that he traded racy messages with at least three women since leaving office.

He vowed to stay in the race, saying he believed "people care more about their futures than my past with my wife and my embarrassing things."

Quinn led the race before Weiner jumped in but slipped behind him in most polls over the past two months. But a one-day poll conducted after Weiner's latest revelations has Quinn leading Weiner in the race for the Democratic nomination. The mayoral primary is Sept. 10, and the general election is Nov. 5. The primary winner needs to get at least 40 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff with the No. 2 vote-getter.

William Eimicke, a Columbia University professor of public management who has held New York City and New York state government posts, said the defection of his campaign manager could cripple Weiner's campaign.

"I think he's toast!" Eimicke said in an email.

But veteran city political consultant Bob Liff discounted the effect of the resignation.

"I don't know that the campaign manager makes that much of a difference," Liff said. "I wouldn't write anybody out."

Marilyn Monroe Assembled Drones During World War II

It seems every six months or so these photos of Marilyn Monroe from World War II make the rounds on the good ol' internet machine. At the time they were captured in 1944 she hadn't yet taken the name Marilyn Monroe, nor had she dyed her curly locks blonde. She was simply known as Norma Jeane Dougherty and worked in a factory in Van Nuys, California. David Conover, the Army photographer who snapped these shots is credited with "discovering" her, as she soon went on to fame and fortune. But there's one detail about these photos that rarely seems to gets mentioned: Marilyn Monroe, the future sex symbol that would set a generation's heart aflutter in the postwar era, is assembling a drone.

Your money and Mayor Glover's dog park legal fees...

Since May 24th there's been an item on Shreveport City Council's agenda that would give the approval for Mayor Glover's outside legal council, Ronald?Lattier,?to not only continue being paid but paid for issues covered under general liability.

The dog park and the 3132 issues fall under this category. The problem is are the payments and their timing. Taxpayer money has already been used to pay attorney Ronald Lattier without approval from city council.

Looking at the dog park issue alone, $18,354.00 has been spent on the mayor's legal representation in all matters dog park. Issues for 3132 go back a number of years.

There was an oversight on the city's administrative side. Since 1997 attorney Lattier has been representing the city as outside legal council when it comes to lawsuits involving personal injury and workers' compensation. That's why the city's attorney's office has been asking council to vote and change the legislation to include general liability. This vote and approval is required by the City's charter.

Since June 1st payments have been in hold for the legal fees and will continue to be frozen until council makes a decision. While taxpayer money goes untouched, it's possible the attorney's work goes unpaid.

New Trio of Verizon Motorola Droid Phones Are Always Listening and Ready

All Droids are not created equal, or at least that's Motorola and Verizon's message today with the introduction of three new co-branded Droid phones -- the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini. Hitting stores in August, the three Android handsets have clear hardware differences from each other but together they share advanced new features, which allow users to control the phone with their voice or gestures.

Turning on the camera doesn't require you to find the camera button on the display. Instead, with Quick Capture, users can launch the phones' 10-megapixel cameras by shaking the phone twice and then tapping anywhere on the screen to snap a photo. You can also share those photos with others around you with the Droid Zap function, which wirelessly sends photos to a nearby Droid phone with a swipe.

The phone responds to voice commands better than other Android phones too. Similar to how you navigate Google Glass, you can say "Okay Google Now" and the phone will be woken up. Say "Okay Google Now Call John" and it will dial up John's number. There's also a new Active Display feature which lets you see notifications, send text messages and make calls without having to wake up the phone. It's all done on the lock screen.

Okay, Glass: Learn More About How Google Glass Works

The camera and voice features are said to be coming to Motorola's made-in-the-US Moto X phone, which will be announced on August 1. ABC News first reported that the Moto X phone will be more customizable than other phones with a selection of color and engraving options, something enabled by the manufacturing facility Motorola has built in Texas.

The new Droid phones will still be made overseas, says Motorola. The Moto X phone, which is said to be one of the first phones worked on since Motorola was acquired by Google in 2011, is expected to be available on all the major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. The phones all run Android 4.2.2, though Google is expected to talk more about the next version of Android tomorrow at an event.

10-Megapixel Cameras Not Good Enough? Nokia's Lumia 1020 has a 41-Megapixel Camera

So, what is the difference between the three phones? Mostly screen and battery size. The $99.99 (with a two-year contract) Droid Mini has a 4.3-inch screen and wireless charging features, while the $199.99 Droid Ultra has a 5-inch screen and is thinner. Then the $299.99 Maxx has that same 5-inch screen as the Ultra, but instead has a much larger 3500mAH battery, which promises two full days on a charge. All the phones are available with Verizon LTE, are made out of a Kevlar fiber material and have a water-repellant coating.

All the phones are available today for pre-order, but won't ship until August. The Droid Ultra and Maxx will be out on August 20 and the Mini on August 29.

The Moto X, which is currently being tested by Verizon, according to ABC News sources, is expected to hit around the same time.

East Cleveland bodies: 'Lots of reasons' to suspect there are more, mayor says

Michael Madison (Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department)

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A suspicious odor unearthed one body in a trash bag in a rundown neighborhood here, and then two more were found over the weekend, and police expected Monday to charge a man who indicated he might have been influenced by a serial killer whose home was found littered with bodies a few years ago.

Police and volunteers scoured about 40 empty homes Sunday until their search was suspended, with no immediate plans to resume, said East Cleveland Police Chief Ralph Spotts.

He identified the suspect as 35-year-old Michael Madison and said Madison was to be charged Monday but did not elaborate.

An odor led to the discovery Friday of one body in a garage. Two others were found Saturday

-- one in a backyard and the other in the basement of a vacant house. The victims were found about 100 to 200 yards apart, and authorities believed they were killed in the past six to 10 days.

The bodies of the three women were all wrapped in plastic bags in fetal positions. "It didn't look like a person could actually fit in the bag," Spotts told residents and activists who gathered Sunday to search.

They're part of the latest in a series of high-profile cases involving the disappearance of women from the Cleveland area.

In 2009, the mostly nude bodies of 11 women were found in garbage bags and plastic sheets throughout the Cleveland home of Anthony Sowell, who was convicted in 2011 of murdering the women and sentenced

to death. In May, three women who vanished separately about a decade ago were found captive in a rundown house. The owner of the house, a former school bus driver, has pleaded not guilty to kidnap, rape and other crimes.

Madison threatened about a month ago to attack women in the same fashion as Sowell, said Eric Wilson, a neighbor who saw Madison frequently. Mayor Gary Norton said Madison gave similar indications to authorities.

"He said some things that led us to believe that in some way, shape, or form, Sowell might be an influence," Norton told The Associated Press.

Madison was arrested Friday after a police standoff. A woman at a small white house at an address for Madison said the family was shocked by the allegations. She identified herself as a family member and answered a few questions through the blinds of a window Sunday but refused to come out or give her name. It wasn't clear whether Madison has an attorney.

Madison was classified as a sex offender in 2002 when he was sentenced to four years in prison for attempted rape, according to court records. He had previous convictions in 2000 and 2001 for drug-related charges.

Wilson and others said Madison was a neighborhood fixture, constantly

walking up and down streets and seen everywhere. Teenager Daniqwa Martin said Madison had offered her a ride in the past but she always declined.

One neighbor, Nathenia Crosby, said she was familiar with Madison and had seen him walking through the neighborhood. She said she had told him to stop chatting with her daughter and warned him after seeing him talk to her cousin.

"It's very scary, especially when he used to be talking to my daughter," said Crosby, 48. "But I told him he was too old to be talking to my daughter because she was only 19. When I found out how old he was, I said, 'You need to move on, she's too young.' "

Detectives continued to interview Madison, Norton said. He said authorities have "lots of reasons" to suspect there are more victims, but he refused to say why.

Spotts indicated that Madison's comments haven't provided clarity on whether more bodies might be found.

"He really hasn't stated that there's any more, but he hasn't said anything that would make us think that there's not," Spotts said.

All three bodies were found in the fetal position, wrapped in several layers of trash bags, Norton said. The bodies were in advanced stages of decomposition and it would take several days to identify them and how they died, Cuyahoga County medical examiner Dr. Thomas P. Gilson said Sunday.

Martin, 16, said she smelled the odor Tuesday but ignored it, thinking it was a dead animal.

About three dozen volunteers, including community anti-crime activists, fanned out Sunday morning across yards, through vacant houses and along a railroad to help police search. The chief advised them to watch for missing floor boards as they looked inside houses. One young searcher crawled under a board screwed across a door to go inside a house.

Barbara Stirtmire, part of a local motorcycle club whose members were pitching in to search Sunday, said she came to help because she knows so many people in the area and herself has a teenage daughter.

"It doesn't make the city look good, I know that," said Stirtmire, 31, who works at a nearby auto parts store. "But as far as everybody coming together, it's beautiful."

The neighborhood in East Cleveland, which has some 17,000 residents, has many abandoned houses and authorities want to be thorough, the mayor said.

"Hopefully, we pray to God, this is it," he said.

LONDON (AP) ? A beaming Prince William and his wife, Kate, have shown their newborn baby boy to the world.

Kate carried the future monarch outside St. Mary's Hospital in central London Tuesday so he could be photographed by the waiting press.

The photos are likely to be reprinted for decades as the baby grows into adulthood and his role as a future king.

The young family is expected to head to an apartment at Kensington Palace.

Skin cancer survival figures hailed - Daily Express

Eight out of ten men, and nine out of ten women diagnosed with the most dangerous form of skin cancer will now survive the disease, a new report by charity Cancer Research UK has found.

Survival rates for malignant melanoma in Scotland have increased considerably since 30 years ago, when only 58% of men and 78% of women beat the disease.

The increases are likely to be down to improvements in treatment, early diagnosis and awareness of the symptoms, the charity said.

Skin cancer is one of the fastest rising cancers in the UK, and around 1,200 Scots are diagnosed with malignant melanoma every year.

Dr Tim Crook, a consultant medical oncologist and scientist at the University of Dundee who treats melanoma and works on Cancer Research UK projects, said: "Forty years ago, only around half of those diagnosed with skin cancer were surviving.

"Eight out of 10 is a massive improvement, but clearly we can't stop there. More and more people are beating skin cancer but we still need to ensure new treatments are developed.

"We've come a long way in the fight against skin cancer and that's largely down to the generosity of supporters who have funded research to help us better understand the disease and find new ways of beating it."

He added: "We have seen big improvements in skin cancer surgery and research from Cancer Research UK-funded laboratories has allowed the development of drugs like Vemurafenib, which isn't a cure but can give patients with advanced melanoma valuable extra months."

Skin cancer survivor Caroline Begg, of Glasgow, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2006, when she was 26 years old.

Caroline, once a regular sunbed user, said: "I was very lucky that my cancer was caught early. I think going to the doctor early and the treatment I received saved my life. Now I am the most cautious person in the sun and would never, ever use a sunbed. I would urge everyone to take care so they don't have to go through the trauma I did."

Hang Pot Lids with S Hooks and Binder Clips

Hang Pot Lids with S Hooks and Binder Clips

We already knew that binder clips were great for holding recipes in the kitchen, but it turns you they can keep your pot lids organized as well.

Reddit user dashingdays keeps s hooks hanging on a curtain rod above his window to hold his pots (which is a pretty great idea on its 0wn), and then uses binder clips hold the lids as well. You just have to clip a large, sturdy binder clip to the lid, and slide it onto the end of the s hook with its corresponding pot. If your lid is really heavy, the binder clip might not do the job, but this trick should work perfectly for saucepans.

Remember though, if you don't have a good spot in your kitchen to hang your pots and lids, cheap adhesive hooks can keep them organized in a cabinet.

Federer upset by qualifier in Hamburg semis

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) ? Top-seeded Roger Federer lost to Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4) Saturday in the semifinals of the German Tennis Championships.

Federer is a 17-time Grand Slam champion and four-time winner in Hamburg. But he was outplayed by the 114th-ranked lefthander who advanced to his first career final. Federer took a wild card for the clay-court Hamburg tournament after losing in the second round at Wimbledon.

Delbonis will play Fabio Fognini of Italy, who moved within one win of his second title in two weeks when he beat third-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (1).

Fognini won his first career title in Stuttgart last week and is riding a nine-match winning streak.

Italy: Court convicts 5 Costa Crociere employees

(AP) ? An Italian court has accepted plea bargains for five Costa Crociere employees in the shipwreck that killed 32 crew and passengers, convicting all of multiple manslaughter and negligence.

The court in Grosseto on Saturday handed down the highest sentence to the crisis coordinator for Costa Crociere, Roberto Ferranini, who was sentenced to two years and 10 months. The ship's hotel director was sentenced to two years and six months while two bridge officers and a helmsman got sentences ranging from one year and eight months to one year and 11 months.

The plea bargains were handled separately from the trial of Costa Concordia captain, who is charged with manslaughter for causing the January 2012 shipwreck off the Tuscan island of Giglio and abandoning the vessel with thousands aboard.

Golf column: Junior golf on Staten Island -- a family affair (photos)

Another week of junior golf action left us impressed with some of the fine young players we have in our borough.

The Jody?s Classic was as interesting as any adult golf tournament we?ve witnessed in some time. The boys and girls who tuned up with the North Central Kiwanis Junior earlier this month took it a step further with improved scoring as well as some fine shotmaking in rather uncomfortable weather.

Even Jody Haggerty, who has been promoting the event for years, was impressed.

?Did you ever see such good swings on all four of the semifinalists in the senior boys? division?? he asked.

Haggerty was referring to Jesse Clemente, Jack D?Anna, Paul Blanchard and Brent Fredericksen, who grinded out the final holes of very tight matches.

There?s no doubt that today?s juniors hit the ball much longer than their predecessors, despite modern golf courses being irrigated and not rock-hard as they were decades ago allowing an extra 50 yards of roll. Sure, modern clubs and golf balls contribute to added distance, but today?s young players are exposed to better teaching and more competition.

Congratulations to Jack D?Anna, Tom Brasco and Taylor O?Halloran on winning their divisions of the Jody Classic. ?

?PARENTS ASSIST? ?

We must tip our hat to the parents of the junior golfers. They are the ones running the taxi service, filling out entry forms, making sure the young men and women are dressed properly and encouraging them when needed.

There?s a big difference in parent participation in golf and other sports. Baseball, football, soccer and basketball parents watch all of the action and sometimes expressing (in some cases, over-express) their opinions of the action.

However, golf parents only see their kids tee off the first and 10th holes, return on the ninth and 18th. In the meantime, moms and dads are left with hours of wondering how it?s going out there and how to fill the time between.

Sue Stuto of Bulls Head has been a ?golf mom? for many years and has as many golf miles on her car as Pan Am. She began when her oldest son, Joseph, 26 and now a Penn State Medical School graduate, got the golf bug. Then it was Alan, 23 and also in med school, who made all of the junior events in that age bracket and kept mom busy behind the wheel.

Steven is 21 and currently playing the No. 1 spot on St. Francis College golf team so you know that he was raised on a golf course.

?All of the boys did quite well in tournament competition and I always enjoyed being there,? Sue said.

?My husband Joe and I played regularly when we were first married, but as the family grew, our game was cut to an occasional outing.?

She?s not finished yet because 13-year-old twins Mark and Stephanie are teeing it up in junior contests.

?I?ve been all over to courses and golf ranges for MGA, PGA events ? even to Myrtle Beach,? Sue Stuto said. ?If it?s a really long day I?ll look for a place to kill time shopping or something, but I have no regrets.? ?

MORE PARENT TALES? ?

One of the strongest young female players to come along in years is Taylor O?Halloran. Her dad, Tim, is the person behind the wheel.

?I really enjoy it,? said Tim, who has a full-time business in West Brighton. ?Have made trips to many courses I never heard of in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Long Island.

?I like being there and we often make it a ?family day out? by taking the family (including wife Cindy, daughter Madison and son William). On some occasions we make it an overnight stay. I often feel the pressure just watching Taylor compete, but I love being there and I think all of these kids are great sports.?

That Taylor recently turned 18 and now drives her own car may present a dilemma for dad, but we?re sure he?ll find a way to be in that gallery when she tees it up. ?

COMING EVENTS? ?

The junior boys and girls will now take to the practice rounds and turn the courses over to the adults for the SIWGA Classic at South Shore on July 19 and the Staten Island Men?s Amateur qualifying rounds at the same course on July 20 and 21. Junior golf will resume with the Bob Lowney Junior at RCCC on July 23. ?

BBC: More British Troops Committed Suicide in 2012 than Died in Afghanistan

by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 July 2013, 16:41 W460

A total of 50 serving and veteran British soldiers committed suicide last year, more than were killed fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to figures reported on Sunday.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed that seven serving soldiers killed themselves in 2012 and a further 14 died in suspected suicides, although inquests have not yet been held.

An investigation by the BBC found that at least 29 veterans also took their lives last year. There are no official figures.

A total of 40 British soldiers died in action in Afghanistan in the same period, while serving as part of a decade-long British deployment that reached 9,500 troops at its peak.

Relatives of those who killed themselves told the BBC the military should do more to tackle post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and treat it like a physical injury.

One soldier who committed suicide, Dan Collins, had twice survived being shot in Helmand, was blown off his feet by a roadside bomb and then witnessed a close friend killed in front of him.

He was diagnosed with PTSD and given treatment, but after 10 months the army said he had recovered. He was later released back home and on New Year's Eve 2011, he hanged himself.

"You've got units for soldiers that are severely injured and they're treated. You should have a unit for treating soldiers with PTSD," said his mother Deana Collins.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said: "Every suicide is a tragedy and our thoughts remain with the families of all those who have sadly taken their own lives.

"Mental health of our personnel and veterans is a top priority for the government, that is why we have committed ?7.4 million ($11 million, 8.5 million euros) to ensure there is extensive mental health support in place for everyone who needs it."

Snowden affair dampens US-Latin American ties

WASHINGTON (AP) ? America is pivoting to Asia and focused on the Mideast. Yet the region Secretary of State John Kerry once called the U.S. "backyard" is sprouting angry weeds fed by the scandal involving intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have already said they'd be willing to grant asylum for Snowden, who is wanted on espionage charges for revealing the scope of National Security Agency surveillance programs that spy on Americans and foreigners. Ecuador has said it would consider any request from him.

U.S. relations with these countries were already testy. But the Snowden affair also has dampened the Obama administration's effort to improve ties with friendlier nations in the region like Mexico and Brazil.

Preservation Durham To Host Two "Hidden Durham Tours ...

Baldwin Auditorium

Baldwin Auditorium

Attendees will get special access to the newly renovated Baldwin Auditorium and Eligibility Building.

Preservation Durham recently announced two new ?Hidden Durham Tours? ? one in July and the other in August. On Tuesday, July 16th, ?Preservation Durham will host a one-time tour of Baldwin Auditorium on Duke University?s East Campus. And on Tuesday, August 6, a ?Hidden Durham Tour? will provide a sneak peek inside the adaptively re-used Eligibility Building in the downtown historic district.

Baldwin Auditorium is the primary rehearsal and performance venue for numerous student musical ensembles, including the Duke Symphony Orchestra. It was named for Alice Baldwin, the first dean of Duke?s former Women?s College. Designed by architects Horace Trumbauer and Julian Abele and built between 1926 and 1930, the auditorium?s Georgian-style architecture recalls the Roman Pantheon with its classical front inserted onto the main, domed building. Renovations to the building, approved in September of 2011 and funded by a Duke Endowment of Charlotte gift, are nearing completion. The interior is being upgraded with improved acoustics, new seats and other amenities, and improvements to the infrastructure.

Milburn and Heister, a prolific Southeastern architectural firm, designed the Neo-classical masonry-and-brick Eligibility Building in 1924 as a Freemasons? Lodge. The City of Durham acquired the building during the Great Depression. Located at 300 East Main Street in downtown Durham?s historic district, it was vacant from 1992 until a developer bought it in 2007. It is now being converted into an event space called ?300 East Main.? According to the developer, the renovations complement the historic features while transforming the once-endangered building into a lively event space.
