Miura is a resident of Milburn Township.

Miura has joint NJIT appointments in the department of mathematical sciences in the College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA) and in the department of biomedical engineering in Newark College of Engineering. His research focuses on developing mathematical models in neuroscience for cell and tissue dynamics. He helps biologists understand how and why a type of depressed brain activity propagates as a slow pathological wave. In humans, this wave is associated with migraine and aura headaches, stroke and traumatic brain injury.

CSLA Dean and Professor Fadi Deek congratulated Miura on the honor. ""Following his well-known and much celebrated work on the Korteweg-de Vries equation, Dr. Miura has turned his attention to developing mathematical models in neuroscience for cell and tissue dynamics which have resulted in pioneering contributions to the understanding of cortical spreading depression. The mathematical biology group at NJIT, of which Dr. Miura is a senior member, has garnered national recognition as one of the most productive groups of math biologists in a mathematics department in North America."

A Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2009), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2005), the Royal Society of Canada (1995) and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (1980), Miura joined NJIT in 2001. Prior to that, he spent 26 years at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, as a professor of mathematics.

Earlier in his career, Miura solved the Korteweg-de Vries equation with mathematicians from the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. To solve the Korteweg-de Vries equation, Miura helped develop the inverse scattering method for solving nonlinear partial differential equations. In January 2006, Miura shared the prestigious Leroy P. Steele Prize for a Seminal Contribution To Research In Mathematics from the American Mathematical Society. The prize honors the work of Miura and his co-authors C.S. Gardner, J.M. Greene and M.D. Kruskal.

Regarding the new Fellows of the AMS program and the Society, AMS President Eric M. LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com)????New York's Museum of Modern Art said Thursday that it has acquired 14 videogames to kick off a new permanent collection that includes old favorites like "Pac-Man," "The Sims" and "Tetris."

The museum has fixed its sights on 26 other games, too, as it expands the new collection curated by Paola Antonelli. Housed in the department of architecture and design, the exhibit will open in the Philip Johnson Galleries in March.

"Are video games art?" Antonelli, a senior curator at the museum, wrote in a blog post announcing the acquisitions. "They sure are, but they are also design, and a design approach is what we chose for this new foray into this universe."

The collection spans decades of games, from 1980's 8-bit hit "Pac-Man" to 2009's iPhone game "Canabalt." But Antonelli said she hopes to round out the exhibit with such dinosaurs as the 1962 game "Spacewar!" and "Pong" and "Snake" from the 1970s Atari-ancestor, the Magnavox Odyssey console.

Visitors will be able to play the games, though games that take longer will have a time limit. Some will also be re-coded into a newer format if the games' physical cartridges are too weathered to withstand a steady flow of gamers.

But some popular games????how did they miss "Angry Birds?"???didn't make the cut.

"Because of the tight filter we apply to any category of objects in MoMA's collection, our selection does not include some immensely popular video games that might have seemed like no-brainers to videogame historians," Antonelli said.

She said they are eyeing games that allow the curators to explore behavior, aesthetic, space and time.

Here is a full list of the games MoMA has acquired:

 Pac-Man (1980)

 Tetris (1984)

 Another World (1991)

 Myst (1993)

 SimCity 2000 (1994)

Easy Charging - CODA Automotive

One nice aspect of electric car ownership is that you never need to go to a gas station again.? You charge the car at home, just like you do with your cell phone.?? And just like your cell phone, the car comes with a ?charger? that you plug into an outlet.

Technically, the ?charger? for the car is called Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment, an EVSE for short.? The CODA comes with a 120 volt EVSE that you can carry around in your trunk and plug in to any regular outlet.? With our current promotion, you also get (for a limited time) a 240 volt EVSE and our partner, Mr. Electric, will install it (details below).

The real difference between these two devices is that the 240 volt EVSE charges the car faster.? The GE WattStation that is part of our promotion mounts on a wall and plugs into a ?normal? 240 volt outlet.? That outlet is what Mr. Electric will provide you with.

You might be thinking that you don?t have 240 volt power at home, but if your house was built or remodeled in the last 40 years you probably do.? Electricity is delivered to your home via a system known as Alternating Current (AC), normally at 240 volts.? If you imagine this electricity as an S shaped wave with a line down the middle, the voltage is the height of the wave.? On a normal circuit you use one side of the wave from the center line (120 volts) and for 240 volts you use the whole wave.

Calling the EVSE a ?charger? is a little misleading because the batteries are actually charged by a computer controlled system built into the CODA.? The EVSE provides the electricity.? In the US, EVSEs are built to provide power very safely.? They communicate with your EV and check the power they are getting from the wall to make sure that there are no electrical leaks, and that the circuit is safe.? Once they verify those items, current flows from the outlet to the car.? These safety standards are the same for both the 120 volt and 240 volt EVSEs.

You don?t really need to think about any of this, as your CODA dealer and Mr. Electric will handle all the details for you.? All you need to do is decide to buy and drive a clean and green car from the All-Electric Car Company.

Free Charger and Basic Installation details:

California residents who purchase a new 2012 CODA electric vehicle (EV) will receive a complimentary home?GE WattStation? Wall-Mount Level 2 EV charger, plus a home assessment and installation (subject to listed conditions) of the charger conducted by?Mr. Electric. The incentive, which is available at CODA dealers across California, features CODA Automotive?s preferred charger and charger installation partners. CODA?s Free Home Charging Station promotion, a value worth approximately $2,000, will run through December 2, 2012.

Installation Conditions:

Based on a standard Mr. Electric price of $99 for home assessment and Standard residential installation of $699.?A standard install is defined by the following conditions:

  • New 40 amp circuit, 8 AWG wire required
  • Residential electrical service panel located within 50 linear feet of proposed location for EVSE in the same room
  • Electrical service panel has physical space and capacity to accommodate a new circuit
  • Wiring in the garage to the EVSE will be routed per code
  • Installation is to be done thru permitting and must comply with all NEC, state, local and/or other municipal electrical codes (notwithstanding anything to the contrary, costs and fees associated with obtaining any necessary licenses or permits are not included in the pricing set forth above)
  • Inclusive of all materials (but not EVSE)

Cricket Australia lauds Ricky Ponting?s career ? Cricket news Update

Cricket Australia on Thursday paid lavish tribute to former skipper Ricky Ponting, after the veteran batsman announced he would quit cricket following the Perth Test against South Africa, starting on Friday.

The decision brings to an end the Tasmanian star?s illustrious 17-year-long cricketing career, which saw him to become the world?s second highest run scorer.

Cricket Australia Chairman Wally Edwards said that the way Ponting announced his decision to quit international cricket was typical of the way he approached his game over the last two decades.

"On behalf of Australian cricket, I congratulate him for his outstanding achievements as a batsman, captain and, after he stood down as captain, leader by example," said Edwards in a statement on Thursday.?

Ponting, Australia's 366th Test player and 42nd Test captain, will equal Steve Waugh?s record of most Tests played by an Australia (168) when he takes filed against the Proteas at the WACA on Friday.

The Tasmania middle order batsman, who turns 38 on 19th of next month, made his Test debut in December 1995, and has since played 167 Tests, scoring 13,366 runs at an average of 52.21. The tally included ?41 centuries and 62 half-centuries with a highest score of 257.

The Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland also praised Ponting for his contribution to country?s cricket.

"Ricky has had an extra-ordinary career and has made an extra-ordinary contribution, including through the example he has set for other elite players and through the excitement he has given fans, young and old," Sutherland said.?

Meanwhile, the incumbent Australian skipper Michael Clarke has said that Punter?s decision to retire come as a surprise to him and other teammates, adding that the legendry batsman would be sorely missed in the team. It is pertinent to mention here that Clarke was present with the retiring Tasmanian veteran in the hastily-called press conference at the WACA Ground, in Perth.

The Aussie skipper, who was close to tears at the press conference, said that he would love nothing more than a big hundred for the departing star in his swansong in Perth.

"I'd love nothing more than to win this Test match, get back to being number one and for Ricky to get a big hundred. What a way for him to go out," concluded Clarke as he fought back tears.

Syria using mines and cluster bombs on civilians: campaigners

GENEVA (Reuters) - Syria has strewn landmines along its borders with Lebanon and Turkey, making it the only country worldwide to use the weapons this year, and is increasingly dropping cluster munitions on civilian areas, campaigners said on Thursday.

Nearly two dozen Syrians, many of them children, are known to have been killed or maimed by Soviet-made mines in border crossing areas so far this year, but the true number of casualties is probably higher, they said.

Another 10 children playing outdoors died in a government air strike that dropped cluster bombs on a rebel-held village near Damascus this week, they said.

"This year we have identified only one government that has used anti-personnel mines and that is Syria. We have information that the laying of mines has continued in Syria, with reports up to October this year that mines are being used," Mark Hiznay, editor of the Landmine Monitor 2012 report, told a briefing.

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), which publishes the report, documented the most recent mine explosion last month in the village of Kharbit al Jouz, near the border with Turkey. Three civilians were injured, including two who lost their legs.

"This was basically a military position that was abandoned by the Syrian military one day and overnight they had laid about 150 to 200 landmines to delay whoever was pursuing them. And eventually the villagers started finding them the hard way as they were going about their business across the paths," Hiznay said.

Syrian rebels are not known to have used landmines in the 20-month conflict aimed at toppling President Bashar al-Assad, but are setting off roadside bombs and other deadly devices, according to the Nobel prize-winning ICBL.

"We have seen instances where the insurgents are using improvised explosive devices but that all we have seen are ones that have been command-detonated, which is of a different character than an anti-personnel mine which is victim-activated," Hiznay said.

Officials from 160 countries that have joined the Mine Ban Treaty meet in Geneva next week to review progress in halting production, destroying stockpiles and clearing mines after wars.

MADE IN THE USSR

Russia has been a major ally and arms supplier to Syria but there was no indication of a recent transfer of mines to Assad's forces, said Hiznay, a senior arms researcher at Human Rights Watch, which contributed to the report with four other groups.

"The ones we have seen going into ground were produced in the Soviet Union in the 1980s, based on the markings that we have seen on the mines," he said.

Human Rights Watch has also documented the use of cluster munitions by Syrian forces, including on an olive oil factory.

"These are indiscriminate, murderous weapons, they are using them for one reason and that is to attack the civilian population," Hiznay told reporters.

Myanmar, long on its list of governments using antipersonnel mines, has been dropped this year as there has been no proven use by state forces, although armed groups have been found to being planting them there in 2012.

"The situation in Myanmar is evolving right now with the transition that's going on there. Our ability to collect almost real-time information is somewhat limited," Hiznay said.

Only four countries - India, Myanmar, Pakistan and South Korea - are known to be actively producing mines, ICBL said.

China, Russia and the United States have stayed outside the so-called Ottawa pact and reserved the right to produce mines, although the Obama administration is reviewing its position.

Order of psychiatric diagnoses may influence how clinicians identify symptoms

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? The diagnostic system used by many mental health practitioners in the United States -- known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders -- assumes that symptoms of two disorders that occur at the same time are additive and that the order in which the disorders are presented doesn't matter. But new research suggests that order actually plays a significant role in determining how clinicians think about psychiatric disorders.

In an article published in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, researchers Jared Keeley, Chafen DeLao, and Claire Kirk of Mississippi State University draw from existing research on conceptual combination to investigate how clinicians diagnose psychiatric disorders that occur together.

They predicted that for disorders with overlapping symptoms -- such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) -- clinicians would describe the disorders pretty much the same way, regardless of which disorder was presented first.

But for two disorders that are quite different -- such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) -- the researchers predicted that the order in which symptoms are presented would significantly influence clinicians' descriptions of the disorders.

Keeley and colleagues also predicted that the features of one disorder would overshadow the features of another, providing evidence for a "dominance" effect.

In two different studies, the researchers asked clinicians to identify the symptoms that would describe each of three disorders individually (MDD, GAD, ASPD) and the symptoms that would describe paired combinations of the three disorders.

In both studies, the clinicians were inconsistent in their descriptions of disorder pairs -- for example, the symptoms they identified for a combination of MDD + ASPD were not necessarily the same as those identified for a combination of ASPD + MDD.

And in one of the two studies, the researchers found that the order of symptoms mattered more for clinicians' descriptions of disorders that were different than for disorders that overlapped, partially confirming their original hypothesis.

Together, these results seem to contradict the assumption that order doesn't matter in psychiatric diagnoses.

Findings from a third study indicated that clinicians' descriptions of the symptoms involved in GAD were dominated by their descriptions of both MDD and ASPD, while symptoms of ASPD and MDD had equal weight.

Keeley and colleagues offer several possible explanations for their findings. Clinicians could be straying from the additive guidelines of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Alternatively, their clinical experiences may have led to "rater drift," such that the criteria that they use to evaluate symptoms have drifted over time.

But it's also possible that practitioners are actually ahead of the curve. Keeley, DeLao, and Kirk argue that clinicians could be "accurately modeling an aspect of psychopathology that our current diagnostic system has yet to accommodate."

While it remains to be seen whether these findings have implications for the actual treatment of psychiatric disorders, Keeley and colleagues believe that these three studies may help researchers and practitioners in trying to bring the classification of psychiatric disorders and actual clinical practice closer together.

5 Marketing To Dos to get done before 2013

by Drew McLellan

November 28th, 2012 ? 6 Comments ? Business owner/leader stuff, Marketing, Strategy

This is the time of year where work grinds to a halt.

We have another two weeks or so before the holiday frenzy, parties, hangovers and the general professional apathy creeps in and productivity becomes a dirty word.

But don?t give up hope yet. ?I think there?s still a few things we can get done before we all sing Auld Lang Syne. Here are the five things I think you should focus on as the year winds down.

Your website: Take the time to look at every page, click on every link and make a list of what?s missing. ?We spend a lot of time building our websites but once they?re done, they tend to be forgotten. ?Fix all those broken links, correct any copy that?s wrong and update the pages that are out of date or are missing some of your more current offerings. ?Look for simple things you can do to increase visitors and engagement.

Your five best customers: Take the time to actually think about those customers who help you keep the doors open. ?Then, in this crazy rushed time ? write them a handwritten thank you note/letter. ?Be specific about why you love working with them ? and send it so you end their year with a smile.

Call it quits: Look back over the past 12-24 months. ?What?s the one marketing tactic that you have really dedicated yourself to but it just hasn?t caught on fire. ?This has to be something that you feel you really implemented well, thoroughly and can?t imagine what you could have done better. ?If you can say that and it?s not delivering results ? it?s time to let it go. ?Make December 2012 the last time you invest in it.

Identify your #1: If at the end of 2013, you could claim one accomplishment or goal?s achievement that would benefit the organization more than anything else ? what would it to be? Spend some time identifying the barriers that are between you and that accomplishment and what you need to leap over them. ?Build a one page business plan for getting to that goal as early in 2013 as you can. ?Make it your priority.

Fix what?s broken: When you look back at your marketing efforts for 2012 ? what?s the one marketing tactic that you know you did a lousy job of implementing? ?You know it can and will work but you just let other things get in the way or you did it half-heartedly. It?s time to get serious. ?Figure out what got in your way and figure a way around it. ?Farm it out, get something else off your plate, make a bet that you can?t afford to lose ? do whatever you need to do ? to ?make it happen and happen well.

There you have it ? get those five things done and then you can drink that 3rd glass of spiked egg nog at the company party without any guilt. ?And you?ll start 2013 with a storm of focus and energy.

Everything Scottsdale, Phoenix Real Estate: Refinancing: Does a ...

I'm not a mortgage broker or banker, but refinancing can be a great way to save money and help you more quickly get rid of a mortgage with less favorable terms . And with interest rates near historical lows, you may be wondering whether a new loan makes sense for you.

Perhaps, but keep in mind that not all refinance offers are worth the trouble or the expense. Before making a decision, take a look at my following six do's and don'ts.

1. Do Pull Your Own Credit Report and Score

Start out by pulling your credit reports so that you know exactly what a prospective lender will see. You don't want any nasty surprises, like having someone else's late payment showing up on your report by mistake or other errors that may not belong to you. Under federal law, you're entitled to one free copy per year of your report from each of the big-three credit bureaus:?Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You get it by visiting annualcreditreport.com. The report won't include your FICO credit score, which is a summary of the information in your credit reports that represents your potential credit risk. It will cost you $19.95 online to get the FICO report. From a bank's perspective, typically your credit score is a reflection of what kind of risk you are....The lower your risk, the higher your credit score will be. And the higher your score, the lower your mortgage rate will be. See? 2. Do Shop Around for the Best Rates and Lowest Overall Fees In recent months, mortgage interest rates have fallen well below 4 percent for many, their lowest levels since the 1950s. But not everyone qualifies for the super-low rates. They're normally granted only to people who have excellent credit and at least 20 percent equity in their homes. So pick up the phone and start dialing lenders -- however, if you contact me, I'll refer you to the best mortgage lenders. Have your credit score in hand,?the person at the end of the call will want to know. You can also shop online at mortgage comparison sites like HSH.com or bankrate.com, which will do the rate hunting for you just to get going. Just understand that rates change on a day-to-day basis. I suggest asking about other refinancing expenses such as loan origination points, loan discount points and lender fees such as underwriting, processing and application fees. And, the big "and", your re- finance expenses can usually be rolled into your new loan so there is no cash outlay from you. Don't focus just on the interest rate. Instead, look at the overall APR or annual percentage rate?on a loan, that way, you'll be able to make a true, apples-to-apples comparison of the overall cost of credit. Most large banks are charging lender fees ranging from about $1,200 to $1,700 for each mortgage closed. 3. Do Use Caution When Taking Cash Out - Better Yet, Do Not Cash Any Funds Out Some people use mortgage refinancing as a way of retiring higher interest debt, such as credit card balances?you borrow extra for that. While eliminating that kind of debt is a good strategy, you don't want to do a "cash out" refinance deal only to run out and charge up the credit card. The risk is that you'll end up both with big credit card balances and with a larger mortgage note that may become unaffordable. 4. Don't Let Low Rates or Teaser Rates Get You Into Trouble It's easy to want to trade in your current mortgage for a new one when it seems like everyone else has a lower rate than you or when banks are offering "teaser" rates, like adjustable rate mortgages that start off low and then reset upward. You may have family members, friends or your local, friendly banker telling you to follow the old, conventional wisdom that you should refinance whenever rates fall by at least 1 percent. Be careful as this may not be the best advice you can get. But getting a new mortgage doesn't always make economic sense. No matter what somebody's telling you, you need to run the numbers and see if a refinance is wise financially. For people who've had their mortgages for 15 years or so, and they've already locked in a low rate, refinancing may not be worth your while. That's easy to figure out, what you pay now, and what you will be paying when refinanced in the same number of years of your mortgage amortization period left in your existing mortgage - the number of years left in your existing mortgage, including the closing costs. Here's a no- brainier - you have 20 years + left on your current conventional mortgage with a 6.5% rate and a balance of $250,000 + and your credit score is 720+.? Your monthly savings could easily be $500/month. And just as you should always read the terms and conditions of any credit card offer, so should you read the fine print of a new mortgage. 5. Don't Extend the Term of Your Loan Unnecessarily In my opinion, nobody over the age of 50 should be taking out a 30-year mortgage. Who would want to be paying a mortgage in their 80s? I'd say go for 15-year loan at the current low rates, especially if you have current great income. So the strategy here folks is that instead of starting all over again with a new 30-year loan, opt for a loan with a shorter term so you can more aggressively eliminate housing debt. Right? My advice, of course, won't apply to everyone. Sometimes older Americans are struggling to just pay their bills. So if you're refinancing because you need a lower payment and if it's a choice between defaulting on a current mortgage versus taking a mortgage with a longer term, then by all means take the longer mortgage. 6. Don't Accept Surprises at the Closing Table In years past, it wasn't uncommon for borrowers to be hit with unexpected fees and rate changes when they proceeded to settlement on their loans. These days, that should not happen at all from competent mortgage lenders, thanks to recent federal laws protecting consumers in the mortgage market. For starters, you can now get a special statement 72 hours before closing. Known as the HUD-1 form, it contains an accounting of all the costs tied to your mortgage. You should carefully review it and compare the lender fees and expenses listed on your HUD-1 to the GFE, or Good Faith Estimate, that your lender initially gave you. You have specific rights. Anytime the rate on your APR changes by more than one-eighth of a percentage point, the law stipulates that a lender must re-disclose that to the consumer. And they have to re-disclose the loan at least three days prior to closing. But if you don't catch something particularly as you're signing a slew of documents during closing?you needn't worry. That's because mortgage borrowers have three days to change their minds. If you close on a Monday, you have the next three days Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to rescind or cancel the transaction. So if you think something isn't how it should be, use those next few days to ask questions and investigate. By the fifth day, Friday, the time will be up and you'll be the holder of a new mortgage. But if you've followed my six steps, you should be able to pay it just fine.

Cyber Monday: Work ethic is no match for shoppers' zeal for a deal

Black Friday just set a record for e-commerce in a single day: $1 billion. But deal-hungry digital shoppers, despite being back at work, were pushing the tally for Cyber Monday higher still.

By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / November 26, 2012

Daniel Holmquist raises his forklift to the top shelf of the Sierra Trading Post Fulfillment Center's racks to a pick a product off the shelves at the facility in Cheyenne, Wyo. on Nov. 13. This year cyber Monday it is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row.

Cyber Monday may have begun as the kid brother to Black Friday, but it sure has grown up. The day?s online sales are expected to ring in near $1.5 billion, according to the online analysis firm comScore, topping the one-day record for e-commerce of $1 billion rung up the day after Thanksgiving.

?What this Cyber Monday tells us more than anything is that consumers are ready to buy no matter where they are or what they are doing if that is the moment that the best deal shows up,? says New York-based Kevin Regan, senior managing director of the marketing firm FTI Consulting.

The upstart shopping day began its jog to the head of the class last year when Cyber Monday was the busiest shopping day of the year, according to Experian?s general manager of global market research, Bill Tancer. Online traffic on this first-day-back-to-work grew from 138 million online visits in 2010 to 177 million total US visits to the top 500 retail sites in 2011, a 29 percent increase, notes Mr. Lancer.

Faster Internet connections, the proliferation of daily deals, and smart phones capable of laser-targeting the best prices have all led to this explosion of digital shopping. But the biggest reason may be the sheer dedication of today?s shopper to getting the best deal possible, says Lancer.

?There is no indication that shoppers are getting tired of comparison shopping or checking as many sites as possible before actually purchasing,? he says, adding that on the contrary, today?s highly-mobile and gadget-equipped consumers are maximizing the ability of their tablets and smart phones to lead them to the best online deals.

Even before the day picked up its nickname from a shop.com?press release back in 2005, Patrick Byrne, CEO of e-tailer Overstock, says his team tracked this uptick after the November holiday.?

?People were exhausted after their first weekend of holiday shopping,? he points out, and heading online was a relief. ?They were coming back into the office to do some real shopping,? he says, using the faster Internet speeds most users found at work.

That equation has changed as broadband connections have become more widespread and commonplace. Shoppers are no longer tethered to their work-desks, as tablets and smartphones for easy price comparisons and access to daily online coupons have turned the day into a sprint.

Cyber Monday and other specially-anointed shopping days early in the holiday season hit growing pains last year when some major sites ? most notably Best Buy ? waited until a few days before Dec. 25 to inform consumers that their orders would not be fulfilled due to everything from lost information to shortages of inventory.

Consumers have a short fuse for this kind of online performance, with recent studies revealing that up to 62 percent of users will leave a site if they encounter more than two obstacles.

E-tailers have to plan for the worst moments, notes Byrne, adding that as a solely online business, his company has worked hard to anticipate problems before they can undermine sales.

?We plan for the spikes, not the average, and build our systems to handle that kind of inventory and online demand,? he says, adding that an educated consumer is his best customer. ?People are getting smarter all the time with apps and other tools,? he says, adding that he expects Cyber Monday to grow at least 10 percent this year, ?along with the rest of Internet traffic.?

While online businesses have shored up their defenses against breakdowns, Cyber Monday shoppers will benefit from?a hard reality of retailing, says?Niraj Shah, CEO and co-founder of Wayfair.com, the second largest online home goods retailer.

Retailers plan ahead for the holidays and order a certain volume of product to stock in?US-based warehouses, he notes.?Once those products are sold, he adds via e-mail, ?there is no possibility of new shipments coming in by the holidays, so there really is a limited quantity of in-demand products.?

?Cyber Monday is an opportunity for consumers to score deals on the products that retailers are predicting to be in demand for the season,? he says. ?Shopping early is important if you are interested in finding the season?s hottest gifts.?

New Canadian Research on Occupational Causes of Breast Cancer Point to Urgent Need for Increased Regulation and Action

November 19, 2012, 10:38 AM EST

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

The CAW is deeply troubled by the latest findings on the occupational causes of breast cancer among Canadian women and is calling for regulatory changes and increased attention by health officials to blue collar women's workplace exposures, in light of the new research.?

The study, released today by Dr. James Brophy and Dr. Margaret Keith, along with Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) and National Network on Environments and Women's Health (NNEWH), uncovered that women working in the automotive plastics, metal-related manufacturing, food canning operations, agriculture, bars and casinos have a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer - due to exposure to carcinogens and endocrine disrupting chemicals.

The study was based on interviews and the health records of 2,000 women in Essex and Kent, working in automotive plastics, metal-related manufacturing, food canning operations, agriculture, bars and casinos. For women with at least 10 years of working in these sectors, their risk of developing breast cancer increased by a staggering 42 per cent.

Many of the women interviewed for the research were former or current CAW members
"As we know from years of working with asbestos and other carcinogenic substances, workplace hazards are not always immediately obvious, but sadly, that makes them no less deadly," said CAW Health, Safety and Environment Director Sari Sairanen.
?
"Important studies like this give credence to the glaring trends that we see in our workplaces - it is absolutely urgent that we do not continue to wait until overwhelming evidence piles up before we take action," said Sairanen.?

The CAW is calling for a number of measures that would improve long term health and safety, including:

.?Increased attention by health officials to blue-collar women's workplace exposures and cancer research;
.?Research initiatives into preventable environmental causes of breast cancer;
.?A public inquiry or commission to examine the risks to women posed by exposures in the plastics industry;
.?Regulatory changes;
.?And action by the federal government to ensure that companies that do use safer and healthier products do not face an unfair competitive disadvantage with overseas companies using harmful substances.

CAW Health, Safety and Environment Director Sari Sairanen, CAW National Skilled Trades Co-ordinator Terry Weymouth and several women automotive plastics workers will be in attendance for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Ontario Region open house this evening. The study's authors and representatives of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) and National Network on Environments and Women's Health (NNEWH) will present the findings of the study.

Sunlight instantly turns ice water to steam using nanoparticles

5 hrs.

Sunlight and itsy bitsy flecks of metal or carbon are all that?s required to quickly vaporize icy-cold water, according to researchers who recently unveiled a new steam-generating process that could revolutionize industrial practices without the hangover of greenhouse gas emissions.

Steam is used throughout our world. It spins turbines to generate electricity and heats kettles used to brew beer. It is used to sterilize medical equipment and distill alcohol.?

But, generating steam typically requires tons of energy to heat and boil water. The most common sources of energy are coal, oil, and natural gas ? fossil fuels that when burned emit carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that?s building up in the atmosphere and causing the planet?s climate to change.

Researchers at Rice University unveiled a method that uses light-absorbing nanoparticles submerged in water to convert solar energy directly into piping?hot?steam. It is so effective that it can even produce the?steam from ice water.

The tiny particles heat up so quickly that they instantly vaporize water, rather than dissipating the?heat into the surrounding fluid. Precisely how this works is a bit of a mystery, according to Naomi Halas, ?director of the nanophotonics laboratory at Rice University.

?There seems to be some nanoscale thermal barrier, because it is clearly making steam like crazy,? she told Technology Review.

The process has an overall efficiency of 24 percent, compared to about 15 percent efficiency for solar panels such as those on your neighbor?s roof. But generating electricity is unlikely the first application of the new technology, which was developed with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.?

Rather, it will be used for sanitation and water purification in developing countries, helping to stem the spread of disease. To that end, the Rice University team has already created a solar steam-powered autoclave to sterilize medical and dental instruments at clinics without access to electricity.

The technology could, however, also improve the efficiency and lower the cost of large-scale solar thermal energy generating plants, which use sunlight to warm up oil that is then used to heat water and generate steam to spin turbines.?

Generating steam directly with the nanoparticles would be 3 to 5 percent more efficient and result in a cost savings of about 10 percent due to the less complex design, Todd Otanicar, a mechanical engineer at the University of Tulsa, told Technology Review.?

For more information, check out the video below. A paper on the process was published Nov. 19 in the journal ACS Nano.?

HP investor sues company for handling of 2 deals

(AP) ? A Hewlett-Packard shareholder has filed a lawsuit alleging the troubled technology company's top executives misled investors about two key acquisitions that have caused billions of dollars in losses.

The complaint filed Monday in a San Francisco federal court comes after Hewlett-Packard Co. stunned Wall Street last week with its own allegations of accounting shenanigans at Autonomy, a business software maker it acquired for $10 billion last year.

The lawsuit filed by shareholder Allen Nicolow alleges HP management concealed the problems at Autonomy and another recent acquisition, Electronic Data Systems, in an attempt to boost HP's stock price.

The stock has lost more than half its value so far this year.

HP, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., declined to comment on the suit.

The FCC will hold a series of field hearings in the coming months to review the challenges to communications in the wake of Superstorm SANDY.? The hearings will commence early in 2013.

Chairman JULIUS GENACHOWSKI said, ?This unprecedented storm has revealed new challenges that will require a national dialogue around ideas and actions to ensure the resilience of communications networks. As our thoughts and sympathies remain with those who have suffered loss and damage as a result of Superstorm Sandy, I urge all stakeholders to engage constructively in the period ahead.?? He thanked Sen, CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NY) for pushing the issue.

Among the topics to be addressed will be how communications providers can work together in emergencies, including sharing resources; back-up power resources; and restoration of service.

Use of stem cells in personalized medicine

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Johns Hopkins researchers report concrete steps in the use of human stem cells to test how diseased cells respond to drugs. Their success highlights a pathway toward faster, cheaper drug development for some genetic illnesses, as well as the ability to pre-test a therapy's safety and effectiveness on cultured clones of a patient's own cells.

The project, described in an article published November 25 on the website of the journal Nature Biotechnology, began several years ago, when Gabsang Lee, D.V.M., Ph.D., an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Cell Engineering, was a postdoctoral fellow at Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York. To see if induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) could be used to make specialized disease cells for quick and easy drug testing, Lee and his colleagues extracted cells from the skin of a person with a rare genetic disease called Riley-Day syndrome, chosen because it affects only one type of nerve cell that is difficult if not impossible to extract directly from a traditional biopsy. These traits made Riley-Day an ideal candidate for alternative ways of generating cells for study.

In a so-called "proof of concept" experiment, the researchers biochemically reprogrammed the skin cells from the patient to form iPSCs, which can grow into any cell type in the body. The team then induced the iPSCs to grow into nerve cells. "Because we could study the nerve cells directly, we could for the first time see exactly what was going wrong in this disease," says Lee. Some symptoms of Riley-Day syndrome are insensitivity to pain, episodes of vomiting, poor coordination and seizures; only about half of affected patients reach age 30.

In the recent research at Johns Hopkins and Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Lee and his co-workers used these same lab-grown Riley-Day nerve cells to screen about 7,000 drugs for their effects on the diseased cells. With the aid of a robot programmed to analyze the effects, the researchers quickly identified eight compounds for further testing, of which one -- SKF-86466 -- ultimately showed promise for stopping or reversing the disease process at the cellular level.

Lee says a clinical trial with SKF-86466 might not be feasible because of the small number of Riley-Day patients worldwide, but suggests that a closely related version of the compound, one that has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for another use, could be employed for the patients after a few tests.

The implications of the experiment reach beyond Riley-Day syndrome, however. "There are many rare, 'orphan' genetic diseases that will never be addressed through the costly current model of drug development," Lee explains. "We've shown that there may be another way forward to treat these illnesses."

Another application of the new stem cell process could be treatments tailored not only to an illness, but also to an individual patient, Lee says. That is, iPSCs could be made for a patient, then used to create a laboratory culture of, for example, pancreatic cells, in the case of a patient with type 1 diabetes. The efficacy and safety of various drugs could then be tested on the cultured cells, and doctors could use the results to help determine the best treatment. "This approach could move much of the trial-and-error process of beginning a new treatment from the patient to the petri dish, and help people to get better faster," says Lee.

Ramirez, Ph.D., Nadja Zeltner, Ph.D., Becky Liu, Constantin Radu, M.S., Bhavneet Bhinder, Hakim Djaballah, Ph.D., and Lorenz Studer, Ph.D., of the Sloan-Kettering Institute; and Hyesoo Kim, Ph.D., Young Jun Kim, M.D., Ph.D., InYoung Choi, Ph.D., and Bipasha Mukherjee-Clavin of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
