A glance at overseas operations for French troops

Afghanistan: France deployed 3,000 sailors on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and other ships following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Its first ground troops inside Afghanistan were 220 soldiers later that year. The French presence in Afghanistan reached a peak of 4,000 in early 2011 but all had left by the end of 2012.

Libya: To defend Libyan civilians against attacks by Moammar Gadhafi's regime, France launched air strikes on Libyan military facilities on March 19, 2011. In addition, four ships carrying 20 attack helicopters and a nuclear submarine took part in the operation.

Kyrgyzstan: In 2002, France reinforced its Afghan operation with 350 troops in Kyrgyzstan.

Ivory Coast: France sent troops to Ivory Coast in 2002 to ensure the safety of its citizens following a coup attempt. Up to 5,000 troops were eventually stationed there to enforce a cease-fire but only 450 troops remain.

Kosovo: France has had 300 troops in Kosovo since 1999.

Chad: France has had a military presence in Chad since 1986 in order to restore peace and maintain territorial integrity. The force consists of 950 troops and a dozen aircraft.

Lebanon: French troops have been present in Lebanon since 1978. France currently contributes 900 soldiers in the FINUL U.N. force.
