Cricket Australia lauds Ricky Ponting?s career ? Cricket news Update
Cricket Australia on Thursday paid lavish tribute to former skipper Ricky Ponting, after the veteran batsman announced he would quit cricket following the Perth Test against South Africa, starting on Friday.
The decision brings to an end the Tasmanian star?s illustrious 17-year-long cricketing career, which saw him to become the world?s second highest run scorer.
Cricket Australia Chairman Wally Edwards said that the way Ponting announced his decision to quit international cricket was typical of the way he approached his game over the last two decades.
"On behalf of Australian cricket, I congratulate him for his outstanding achievements as a batsman, captain and, after he stood down as captain, leader by example," said Edwards in a statement on Thursday.?
Ponting, Australia's 366th Test player and 42nd Test captain, will equal Steve Waugh?s record of most Tests played by an Australia (168) when he takes filed against the Proteas at the WACA on Friday.
The Tasmania middle order batsman, who turns 38 on 19th of next month, made his Test debut in December 1995, and has since played 167 Tests, scoring 13,366 runs at an average of 52.21. The tally included ?41 centuries and 62 half-centuries with a highest score of 257.
The Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland also praised Ponting for his contribution to country?s cricket.
"Ricky has had an extra-ordinary career and has made an extra-ordinary contribution, including through the example he has set for other elite players and through the excitement he has given fans, young and old," Sutherland said.?
Meanwhile, the incumbent Australian skipper Michael Clarke has said that Punter?s decision to retire come as a surprise to him and other teammates, adding that the legendry batsman would be sorely missed in the team. It is pertinent to mention here that Clarke was present with the retiring Tasmanian veteran in the hastily-called press conference at the WACA Ground, in Perth.
The Aussie skipper, who was close to tears at the press conference, said that he would love nothing more than a big hundred for the departing star in his swansong in Perth.
"I'd love nothing more than to win this Test match, get back to being number one and for Ricky to get a big hundred. What a way for him to go out," concluded Clarke as he fought back tears.
