Kuwait Cabinet resigns in post-election formality

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Kuwait's Cabinet has resigned in a procedural move following last week's parliamentary elections.

The move was required to form a new government after elections, but no changes in key posts are expected.

The official Kuwait News Agency says the country's ruler formally accepted the resignations on Monday.

Pro-government lawmakers swept Saturday's elections after a wide-ranging boycott by opposition groups, including conservative Islamists and Western-leaning liberals.

They claim the Kuwait's emir overstepped his authority by changing voting rules in the strategic Gulf nation, which is the base for thousands of U.S. ground troops as part of the Pentagon's counterweight against Iran.

Opposition factions have vowed to step up protests seeking to overturn the election results for the most politically powerful parliament in the Gulf.
