Sony's Xperia P smartphone has been confirmed to be receiving the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, with the company going on record with its update schedule, promising upgrades by the middle of next year.
The first devices to get the upgrade, which brings performance improvements and an improved notification system, among other new features designed to better compete with Apple's iPhone-powering iOS platform, are the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V, which will all receive an over-the-air upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in February 2013. The update will be free of charge, but may roll out in a staggered fashion starting with the US - meaning European customers may be faced with a small delay.
The Xperia P, Xperia J and Xperia Go are all to be upgraded by the end of March 2013, again in a staggered roll-out starting with US customers, while the Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia Ion and Xperia Acro S will follow in the weeks after that launch.
Sadly, it's not all good news for Sony's Android smartphone customers: BGR reports that the company has decided not to launch Jelly Bean upgrades for its Xperia U, Xperia Miro, Xperia Tipo and Xperia Sola handsets, leaving those customers on Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich.'
No firm schedule for the UK roll-out of the Xperia updates has yet been provided by Sony.
