Chinese culture comes to life at special gala performance

Chinese New Year celebrations will continue in Bristol this weekend as students from the University of Bristol put on a vibrant performance to showcase Chinese culture.

Around 20 members of the Bristol Chinese Students and Scholars Association (Bristol CSSA) will present a Chinese New Year Gala Performance on Saturday [16 February] at the Victoria Rooms.

A series of 10 acts - including singing, music, drama and a fashion show - will help to welcome the Year of the Snake.

Lei Wang, President of the Bristol CSSA, said: ?Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China. We want to welcome it together with hundreds of Chinese people in Bristol, as well as presenting the essence of Chinese culture to local people.?

Last year?s performance in the Wills Memorial Building proved so popular that it?s been moved to a larger venue with a capacity for 600 people.

The Chinese New Year Gala Performance begins at 6pm on Saturday, 16 February, in the Victoria Rooms, Queen?s Road, Bristol, BS8 1SA.

  • Ticket cost ?5 each and can be bought from Sherry on 07714 086881, Han Qin on 07917 042956, Shiquan Wu on 07453 272925 or Theresa on 07837 946364.

The Gala follows on from colourful celebrations over the weekend when Bristol CSSA and the University of Bristol Lion Dance Troupe played a major part in events across the city.

Professor Judith Squires, Dean of Social Sciences and Law at the University of Bristol, said: ?It was fantastic to see so many of our students leading the celebrations for the Year of the Snake at the City Museum and M-Shed.? Hundreds of people flocked to the city museums to see the University's fabulous Lion Dance Troupe and take part in student-run events ranging from tai chi workshops to origami-making.?
